Urgent Help Bike Overheating!!!!!

Last week i bought a brand new XR650R 07 couple of minutes i started the bike and was running for 10 minutes and started overheating the bike has 2 miles on it and it's NEW what can't it be?????????

Just ruined my ride for tomorrow (sunday), dammmmmmmmmmm, im gonna take it back to the dealer...... :mad:

I've read on here that they seem to have faulty thermostats and that people use some other coolant than the one that comes stock.

I bet you could go riding today- just do not let sit at idle for very long- when I first got me bike it was jetted lean, and it over heated on the first ride, when I stopped and let it idle while talking with a friend. After I jetted it properly, it has not over heated since...

All stock XR650R's will overheat if left idling long enough (stock especially).... the muffler is corked up and the jetting is lean........and, the raditor DOES not work if it doesn't have air flowing through it.

"Uncorking" the bike and having the proper jetting to compliment will make the bike run alot cooler.

It is possible that the thermostat is stuck closed (but I doubt it)

Quite a few people run a different thermostat (and some take it out all together --- but this might make the bike run tooo cool), the other fix is to change the raditor cap to one that won't make the coolant boil over.

I have a temperature sensor installed on my bike..... while idling ---- I can sit there and watch the temp rise, and rise, and rise.... you get moving --- almost instantly the temp drops back down.

Make sure you get the hop up kit. Which includes changing the main and pilot jet including the HRC needle, UNI filter and smog block off kit. That will uncork the BRP. Also the 1.6 rated radiator cap and a better thermostat helps too.

I think I saw a post where a guy put a KTM rad fan on his BRP with a switch...

If I had aXR650R I really would look into this, I had similar overheating Probs with my old K5 when krawling till I installed BeCool fan kit which pulled 5000CFM of air! I actually had to install bypass swith for water crossing and over cooling.

I would not even try to fix it myself I would go straight back to the dealer. I know it is hard to get them to help sometimes but jeez it is a brand new bike.

Yeah sucks big time.the thing is that the bike spill all of the coolant and was running for 5 mins. just the warm-up for the sunday ride, and them all the coolant was spill all over the place. yeah tomorrow all the way to the dealer. 2 miles on the bike, 15 mins running, no dust on her.

If it was just sitting there warming up it will piss all the coolent out. I pulled out the stock thermostat 4 years ago and am running a 1.8 Kawi cap and I still over heats in the tight 1st 2nd gear stuff - these bike like to run and run fast:ride:

I guarantee if you pull your stock thermostat it will be deformed and stuck open. That's why you're boiling it over. Get the new high temp thermostat from SRC and add some "water wetter" to the new coolant. End of problem. I just did it with my new 06 XRR. It had the same problem. I wouldn't run without a thermostat. The system is designed to work within certain temps. without a thermostat to regulate coolant flow the rad can't work efficiently. Coolant won't stay in the rad long enough with a completely open system. My 2 cents. See my other post on "XRR boiled over today". There's some pics of the buggered up thermostat.

The KTM fan kit has the fan, which is the Spal 4 inch fan, and a thermoswitch. I have the Vapor speedo which has a coupling that the speedo's temp. sensor is tapped into. I tapped the aluminum fitting for the thermo switch that came with the KTM fan and wired it up. I attached a picture to show how I mounted the fan. If you need more pictures just pm me. Your bike was not ruined and what happened is common in the stock bike before it is uncorked if you let it idle very long. The 1.8 radiator cap combined with uncorking the bike should keep it cool even when you idle it a bit. I have never had a problem with my bikes spitting stuff out even when riding slow in hot weather. The stock thermostat when stuck open will not necassarily overheat the bike if all other things are right. I actually ran mine with out a thermostat for a couple years without a problem. I now run the napa thermostat because I have started riding the bike more in the winter. I suspect your problem is simply what most everyone says. Uncork it and get it jetted richer combined with the 1.8 radiator cap and a after market thermostat won't hurt. Even when these bikes run out of water they are running cooler than the air cooled XR600's ran.

If you just left it idling for ten minutes, then my guess is the bike is fine. They gotta have air going by to keep cool. in what part of california are you

riding?

yeah i went throught the same problem when i first bought mine very first ride. then i took it to the dealer and they said you gotta keep air flowing thru the rads. soon after i changed to 1.8 cap uncorked and then i use engine ice. i rarely get boilover unless im going thru some serious tight twisty stuff for long periods. but then as soon as i open it up it's all good. no reason for alarm you just gotta chage the way you ride. always shut off when your just sitting talking or waiting for someone.

i imagiine ya already know this area, but just in case: while you're uncertain about the bike, you might want to try testing it out in the plaster city/superstition area just north of the border, 100 miles east of san diego, easy access to the freeway to whatever part of cal you live in, no fuss at the border........... just in case things don't go your way on the break-in ride.
