Just did Daves Mods (and some others) WOW!!!

Recommended Posts

Well, my bike was finally broken in and i passed my license test so it was time to mod it!

I bought another carb from a fellow thumpertalk member so that i could keep the stock one in case the smog nazis in CA decide to start checking bikes!

The carb came setup with a 55/175 jet setup and a .056 needle shim. Since i was keeping my bike fairly stock and retaining the stock pipe, I changed the jets to a 55/160 setup and reduced the needle shim to .020!

Anyway, as i am installing the IMS smog block off plates, i notice that the carb i bought from TREADMARKS is a NON CA carb and doesnt have ANY of the smog nonsense that needs to be blocked off! WOOHOO

I proceed with the install of the new modified carb and cleaned off all of the smog nonsense, then installed my 4.7G Clarke tank!

I fired it right up and let it idle, once it warmed up, it wouldnt hold an idle. I quickly checked the idle speed screw, kicked it up a notch and all was good!

Once i let the bike warm up and run check for leaks, i took it for a ride!

All i can say is WOW, what a difference! I read all of the info about how these mods liven it up, but i am still most impressed with the results! MUCH quicker throttle response and the front end flys into the air with a blip of the throttle in 2nd gear!

Anyway, i am sure this has been mentioned a 100 times, but i am most stoked with these mods!

Current setup = 55/160 jets, desmogged, desnorkeled, UNI air filter, stock pipe! Loving it!:worthy:

Congrats on your license. These bikes are a total blast when properly modded and it really makes the weight of the bike a non-issue once they are uncorked. Now go have some fun, watch out for the wheelie nazis.

Thanks!

Yes, the weight of the bike isnt that much of a problem anyway since i weight close to the same as the bike!

IMHO that Edelbrock Idle Adjust Screw is your best friend. Whenever I go to start mine I crank in 2-6 turns, depending on the outside temp and once it starts I can leave the throttle alone.

As it warms up you just dial those turns back out to keep the idle where you want it. If you don't like the idle adjust's flex cable flopping around you can easily fab a small braket to mount the end to the engine case.

Enjoy your new Pig and your new license. Congrats!  :worthy:

Yeah, i do ride it on the highway to get to the trails. Cruises pretty good at 75mph.

quick note: i have a 14 tooth on my counter now and it will hit 90 no problem...as long as you are not going on the freeway for hours it makes a big diff! i take 10 minutes to change mine if i am going to do a long cruise but keep the 14 mostly.

I am glad ya got the carb on and like it. It did better on the freeway than my Edelbrock does.

Now your making me miss it! ?

Actually, i cant get it dialed in

The slide appears to be heavily scored.

I have tried all jet and needle shim combos and cant get it right. Dont get me wrong, its still WAY better then stock, but its either running too rich and puffing some smoke or running too lean and choking!

Whats wrong with the edelbrock on the freeway??

I ran the 14/48 on mine for a few rides and did not like the buzz at cruise speeds (60 and on), I only mild tral ride it and take it for what it is, so I went back to the stock geraing. I like the stock sprockets. Nice long pull between the gears and loafs at 60MPH.

I admit that I was a skeptic of the mods, but the motorhead in me got the best of me and I uncorked mine. Yup, WOW! ez starts, instant COLD idle, CRISP throttle response and what seems like endless pull everytime I twist the go fast grip. Wheelies ? - yessir all day long 2nd gear blips of the throttle.

My Mods: 55 pilot, 165 DJ main, DJ needle, Uni air filter, snorkle gone, white brothers E2 pipe, IMS smog block off kit.

Also: Baja Designs skid plate, & temp dip stick, Dunlop D606 tires, Acerbis forsk and front disc brake guard.

Wants: better more sanno looking hand guards, smaller mirrors.

I would put the carb back like it was, as it ran absolutelygreat for me. Go with a K&N-remove the snorkle, and put a slip on pipe on it.

I did not have any issues with the scoring on the slide, and it operated very smooth.

The Edelbrock has an issue with the slide sucking against the carb body which required a stiffer throttle spring to allow it to return to idle quickly. The stiffer throttle spring contributes to wrist fatigue and a finicky high speed throttle.

At first i put it in AS IS, but it was WAYY rich for my setup (UNI filter, Snorkel Removed and Stock Pipe.

I am going to keep futzing with it for a bit

Yes, obviously i want to, but that is still 1-2 months out.

Will be going to the WB E2 soon!

Great! this will be your final and most noted difference in the uncorking process. The pipe enables the engine to breathe freely, and compliments your intake mods. I ran rejetted and airbox open and smog gone with a stock pipe and yea it was okay, but man when I installed the white brothers E2 it really came alive, strong freight-train pull from idle to seemingly infinity...

plus it sounds "healthy".
