rear master cylinder

does any of the newer yz rear brake master cylinders work on the older models that have the plastic resevoirs?

Yes, but with a qualifier:

You will need to remove the reservoir mounting tab from the subframe for clearance. Also, in order to remove or replace the reservoir cover on the newer type MC, you'll have to remove the upper one of the two bolts that hold it on so you can rock it back a little. IIRC, you have a YZ400. The information I give here is accurate for a 2001 model. Yours could be different, so do some measuring and comparing. I have an '04 YZ450 unit on my '01 YZ250F, and it works fine.
