I have "under grip" heaters (symtec) on my st1300 and my wife's recon, I would love to put a set on my 2005 XR. I haven't done any mods to the electrical system, everything is stock.

I am wondering if it might be OK to tap into the headlight lead and put in a switch to toggle between the headlight and the grips, so that the headlight and the grips can't be on at the same time. I am not sure what the stock headlight draws (time to google), but the grip heaters are 4 amps max. I assume the headlight circuit is regulated and I'm afraid to toast the regulator and/or the stator.

I searched and it seems some have put them on a 650L, but it has to have a more meaty electrical system. Anyone done this on a stock 650R? I'd much appreciate hearing any comments/experiences.

Yes, I have them on my XR650R but it has a Baja Designs rewound 250w stator. My riding partner however has a stock system and he did exactly what your talking about. He has two switches, one which shuts his headlight off and the other a three way switch to his grip heaters hi/lo/off. They work great.

Thanks for the reply. I might look into the rewind too, but for now, I'll give this a shot.
