Just took the XR650R for a Spin

I borrowed my neighbors gps and decided to take a quick night run on the BRP. I hammered it on the asphalt. After about a 3/4 mile run my top speed was 91.4. :mad: I think it had a few more MPH's left in it but i reached the next stop sign pretty quick. Does this sound about right? It seems to be running strong all the way through the gearing!

Year 2002 XR650R
Stock 14/48 gearing
Rider Weight 200lbs
Uncorked - 175main, 68s, B53E needle middle postion, Uni Filter.

Mine will tap out at 85 to 86 mph but I have 14x52 gearing. It gets to that speed very quickly. Seems to just hang there. If I put a 15 tooth on front I would be doing 95 to 100. I don't need to go that fast on the dirt. :mad:

wait a minute, sorry...how many more mph would you estimate it had in it? I was under the impression that the R's were faster than the L's, and while I was breaking in the bike before I rode it to Costa Rica, it had an indicated top speed of around 100-102...was the speedo really that far off? I know they had a tendacy to be something like 3-7% off on my R1's digital readout, but I thought the analog 650L speedo would be far more accurate. Is it?

I thought the 650R's top out at something like 105, or 110 if you have some "go fast" parts.

Is it just the bottom end that they're faster on? Sorry for the unlearned posts, I don't know all the differences yet.

For what its worth, i have GPS verified my L speedo. 85mpg on the L speedo was coming in at 84mph on the GPS! Close enough for me!

Remember, if you change tire diameter in the front, that will alter your readings some! How much, i have no idea!

on my gear driven speedo with stock gearing i just about hit 100. kinda hard to be completely accurate with the dial but i would way 98-100. then i put on the edelbrock and i think it is closer to 103 now

My 650R showed 103 mph on gps my trailtech showed 101 and it was winding pretty good even with 15/45 gearing, my 93 650l did 83 to 87 mph depending on temp.

Yes, that's the right impression, they definitely are, no contest. Stock gearing uncorked R tops- mid to high 90's. Stock gearing uncorked L tops-low to mid 90-s. (at least on my bikes). Of course as others have stated R will go over 100+ with sprocket changes.:mad:

A friend and myself hit 102 on our R's. I was running 15-48 and he was running 14-48. It was on a dirt road. He had a stage 1 cam and my motor was just jetted and uncorked.

So when my 650L says I'm doing 102, it's wrong, right? Is it worth mentioning that when I test it, it's generally about 40-50 degrees outside, at sea level, or does that not make a difference?

How long is it taking you guys to reach your top speed? When I went on this test run I had it pegged for 1/2 - 3/4 of a mile. I dont know how much faster it could of gone but it felt like it was close to maxed out.

Most speedos lose accuracy after reaching a certain MPH good figure is @ 100MPH or more, you start losing 3-7% of actual speedo reading. This is true in any application, bikes, cars, trucks, etc,etc.......Unless you spend some good money at a shop that does nothing but meter building, rebuilding and calibrtions. And even then you still have loss to deal with in the upper speed zone.

Faster as top speed? Not by much. Doesnt the 650 L have 15 -45 gearing and i know the 650r has 14-48 gearing. So yea if you have the power the L should top out faster. My R gos a indicated 99-100 at the rev limiter. 100mph with 14-48 is the majic number i belive. My R gos 0-85 very fast and then tha last 15mph seems like forever. I imagine because the stock header and the bikes cams are not made for top hp at high revs. I hope to get a new full exhaust system for more top end. Not for speed, just for the excitement factor. ive heard uncorked Ls toping out at 85-90mph although. It is possible you are going 102mph, lets run em and find out. where you at?:mad: :mad:

We were in Baja when we hit 102 last month....I'm in San Diego. Usually at Ocotillo, Mc Cain, or Lake Morena on the weekends.
