will the 05+ swingarm fit on the 02-04 frame? I know the part is different, so it will have a different part number, but what about fitment?

It's the same frame from 02-07.  There were only minor engine and graphics changes from 02-07.  It is essentially the same bike.

New for 05 *New front axle placement for improved fork action and turning.

is this a change in the actual frame, or what? possibly the clamps, but im not 100% sure.

thanks guys.

The frame did not change.  Axle will be in a different position on the forks.

You can never be too safe.  Good luck with your conversion.  You should do even more conversion and and put an 09/10 gas tank and shrouds on it too... Just to give a really nice updated look.  There is a guy on the 450 forum that has an 02 450 that he did 09/10 plastics....(except side plates)

ah. might think of that. but the 02-08 will be a hug upgrade for me. ive had 01 plastic for years now. is there any way of gettin the side plates from the '10 on there too?

I would say that is a pretty fair price for an 06, depending on how used.  I wouldn't expect too much of a better price from a stealership.  Seems like the only main issues that I am aware of with the newer CR's was the jetting.  They had a habit of not staying properly jetted for some people.  Some people have resolved that with a JD jet kit, others have swapped the carb for the Keihin PWK.  So, maybe check the carb to see if it is the stock Mikuni or not.  But, I wouldn't consider that a deal breaker, nothing you can't work out.

As far as the clutch on your 96, you do not have to split the cases.  Remove the brake lever, and pull the clutch cover off.  You will have full access to the clutch to begin removing it.

I own one ( Cr 06 250 ). Buy it and love it. I'm going to do low end power mod on mine. Oh, some cosmetics too. It still kicks most 450 4 T on the motocross tracks !

Awsome thread!!! I can say I own a 2007 CR250R myself. And unfortunatly, there is no change from '06. Still a great bike tho.

But I have to say, my 2000 CR250 was faster. LOL

My Son is looking to get back into riding after a few year sabatical.  He was 175 pounds, rode very well on a 1986 Cr250.  Now in his child bearing years, he has swollen up to 230 lbs but still rides very well...mostly woods.
He is determined to get a used CR250 and occasionally listens to my advice, so my questions are as follows:

What would the best years for him to search out?
What should he expect to pay (ball park) for a bike in good condition?
Would any of you guys recomend an increase in displacement to account for his new found girth?
If so, what kits?
I appreciate any help out there from the experts.  His 1986 CR was a tremendous buy and served him well for over 10 years of hard trail riding in Michigan, I guess I can't blame him for wanting another one.
I ride a YZF450 2006, which he rides very well also, but I am thinking a four stroke might be more costly to maintain than a good 2 stroke.
In two years we need to plan out a bike for his son, so spending is somewhat limited as we bring in new generations to the ride.

You are right. 2T is best and not only for the lower maintenance cost. I counted 10 good reasons that you can find at this and other sites. Can a engineer ( Me ) be wrong ? Perhaps, But not on this issue.
I found that the 1992 model to be very good. I own an 2005 which is also very good. Only little problem is the clutchy power. but you can easily over come this by going up on the CC. ( 275 or 285 ). So, I will say if you can fine and afford an 2005, Get one and mod it. You should also go for suspension heavier springs.
Every time I pass by a guy on a heavy 450F, I see the tears on their eyes. Boy, do they get surprised id not disappointed :smirk:

I'm 225lbs, and have been heavier, the 250 has plenty of beans without a big bore kit to haul your son. New springs will be more important than more engine, and a revalve if you have the extra cash. I would go for an '02 or later, everything about these later bikes is better with the exception of low-end power, which can largely be fixed with a Keihin PWK carb. The big bore kit would add power and low end torque, the '02+ bikes can only be bored safely to 265cc, Eric Gorr of Forward Motion has probably done more of these than anyone I'm aware of. It's on my list, but I did suspension first, and the PWK carb to good effect. There's nothing wrong with earlier CR's if that fits your budget better, any semi-recent CR that's been taken care of should be a solid choice. That's my 2 cents worth

The frame is the same but the swing arm is not. The shock got 10mm longer in 05'.
