what is uncork?

Recommended Posts

First thing you need is a good quality corkscrew one that wont allow any cork to fall into the carburator! LOL just kidding.

The bike comes jetted lean and quiet to meet the epa's noise and pollution requirements. To "uncork" a xr650l you will need to spend some money, an exhaust system is pretty much mandatory as well as a jet kit, which will compensate for the added airflow, at that point you can remove the snorkel from the top of the airbox, just drill out the two rivets that retain it. Also you can drill out the left side panel if desired, where it covers the air box. also you can get a emissions block off kit that will allow you to remove the smog pump.

IMS makes a good block off kit

Dynajet makes a good jet kit that includes spring for the slide main and pilot jets and new needle.

also reccomended is a K&N air filter

White Brothers E2 exhaust seems to be the preffered exhaust system, though I have a FMF powercore4 and stainless header, but it is on the loud side of exhuasts.

Mostly though if you dont know what your doing find someone who does though I would not take the bike to a Honda dealer for these kinds of modifications. You can probably find someone through thumpertalk who is nearby. Good luck, These bikes can be totally transformed with a few good modifications! :lame:?

Bike will run a little hotter and leaner. does it still have the smog pump? Do you know if the carb has been rejetted? Myself I would at the very least go up one main jet size even with the stock exhaust, your better off being slightly rich on mixture than too lean. Give me five minutes and I will post the stock main jet size on this thread.

If my eyes arent totally shot I believe the stock jet is a 155, my Dynajet kit came with a 160 which is two up from stock and a 165 four up, I am using the 165, If you want I will send you the 160 but please do not blame me if you mess up, once again taking a carb apart is not hard but if you have no experience with it get some help.

You can everything you need to uncork your bike on ebay under search xr650l. most of my uncork stuff came from there, with no problems.

I do not know what a honda dealer would charge for a jet or if they even would have one in stock but I would definetly go up a size or two, and if you do not have inspections in Texas get rid of the smog pump, and you will get rid of all the popping and sputtering the bike does now. even if you do have inspections there are ways around that. that local inspection, gas station, not the bike shop, are likely not to know much about this particular bike. Good luck. ?

I have not seen daves mods, but heard a lot, I do not know what it is about drilling the slide Ive heard I did none of that just the jet kit my bike runs great, though I would probably read it if I knew where to find it? :lame:

go to 4strokes.com and look under tech for hondas, hihs carb mods are in there, dosent look hard, just time consuming ?

Read it I think drilling the slide is the same as replacing the slide spring with a lighter spring, other than that I think I have it covered, it took me about 30 minutes to remove carb install kit and put the carb back on, I did not remove the tank or seat to do it just the rear brake fluid container (res). I notice the profile of the needle that came in the kit was different and is adjustable with a e clip and notches instead of washers from a hardware store! ?

Putting in a lighter slide spring opens the slide more for a given airflow rate, and makes the slide open only slighty faster.

Drilling the holes allows the air to get sucked out from above the slide faster, meaning the slide will open(rise) sooner when the throttle is opened. Drilling the slide has a much larger effect than changing the spring.

When you take out the 155 and exchange it for Rebelventurer's 160 could you send me the 155? I have the stock 152 in my XR600, It's to lean.

OK, excuse me! My eyes are shot the stock jet is a 152.5 And if you want the 160 cause yours is too lean pm me I will send it to you.

I need to get a cup and do the " help for the blind" thing.

Why do they make them numbers so small anyway? I guess I need one of them magnifying glasses. And hey a 2 does look like a 5 if you turn it upsidedown. ?:lame:?

So Dave, if I drill my slide in conjunction with that lighter spring is that going to get rid of the off idle hesitation, and was those holes 3/32" or 5/32"? Remember I am blind 2's look like 5's especially when they are stamped in brass!

Or is that hesitation only going away with a pumper carb?

I appreciate the info, you have moved my opinion of yankees two notches above them banjo playing alabamans, or is it alabamians. Sincerely Thanks! ?:lame:?:bonk::eek::bonk:

HEY, look its a six pack!!!

Drilling the slide, with or without the new spring, will go a long ways towards removing the hesitation.

Still, even with that, when you crank the throttle open the slide will take 1/2-sec or so to open all the way. This can be a good thing in low-traction situations.

The drill size is 5/32.
