Hi guys. I had this Yamaha 175 given to me. The previous owner and his father have different answers on what year it is and what happened to it. It was basically new when put away 20 some odd years ago. I think it's cool and want to restore it to running condition. Can someone tell me what year it is and anything else they might know about it? Is it worth my time? The number on the frame and engine is # 455-001850
Thanks!

Quite possibly a 1975 MX175B, only going by the microfiche diagrams and part number prefix (455) found HERE
Click on Proceed to Parts Catalog, and then fill out the information at the top, using 1975 as the year.

Sure looks like a MX175 to me. (They preceded the YZ.) Nice find. It would make a great little AHRMA MX bike.

I think it might be a bit earlier than a '75. I don't know when they started building them but I seem to remember my Mom had something like that and it was a '72.

I did some searching and reading on that first link and it appears to be a 74' MX 175 A. Pretty old. Don't see that many bikes with 2 shocks in the back.

a friend of mine's dad had one of those...his was actually a YZ 175, the only year they made the YZ in 175cc displacement. i'm pretty sure the MX series were white tanks with red logo. the early YZ series were twin shockers with "yamaha" followed by the displacement on the tank. i think the YZ 175 was a 1975......all the YZ's except the 80 and 100 went to monoshock in 1976.

The YZ175 was in '76, and it was a Monoshock bike. That doesn't look anything like the YZ175.

Does it make good power?
I'm serious about restoring this bike. I've found that one of the hardest things to locate is the exhaust-aftermarket or stock. I might put on a dt175 stock exhaust as they seem more common. I know it's not the "correct" one but I'm not doin the obsessive everything has to be OEM numbers matching deal. Sorry for all the links, I can't figure out how to post pix???

Yep, it's a 74 MX175...

That engine, with some porting and polishing, a good expansion chamber on it and a fresh tune up will run really well... I actually had a version of the MX125 that I raced locally back in the day... The important thing is that you go through the engine and give it a nice top end job - not sure how the lower end is - but you can check that when you've the cylinder off. Also - check your reed valves, too.

If the rear shocks are shot (which given it's nearly 32 years old they almost certainly are...) works performance will build you a set or you can pick up some Progressive magnums..

If you need bearings and other parts - check over here:

Bike bandit has been terrific with parts and stuff...

Progressive fork springs will firm up the front along with some fresh oil, too.

There's a brand new bassani for a DT175 - ya might be pretty close on there..

Have fun and post up the pics as you go!
