Last spring I bought a 78 XT 500, while it was in fairly good shape, it suffered from a lot of good intentions and few skills. Over the summer I've slowly solved several small problems. One of them was that the rear axle was frozen into the backing/hub. Early on I had got it starting and running well, and taken several test rides, notice that it seemed to jump in and out of high gear. Ok the sprockets were severely worn to the point of teeth being broke off, figured the chain was jumping a tooth. Freed up the axle and replaced the chain and sprockets. Bottom line it's in the tranny, while replacing the chain I noticed that when I turned the drive sprocket it had a tight spot the didn't want to turn freely. Now the trans has always shifted stiffly, but neutral was never hard to find. This couldn't be related to the oil needing changed? Through E-bay I bought a complete gear set, on the shafts, how hard is it to split the cases and replace the tranny? I have both manuals Clymers and Haynes. Any and all advice is welcome and appreciated. Thanks Duce:

if the cases split top to bottom, its actually not to hard. Hondas are this way, but an xt is not a honda. if the cases split side to side, you've got a fair bit of work- instead of bieng able to just drop the bottom half of the case you have to pull the top end off, the flywheel off, cluthc, kicker, etc, and then split the cases. not impossilble, but a fair bit of work. I'm doing something similar to my XL175 right now... but its a honda, so alls i had to do was drop the bottom half off! took me about 45 min to get the engine out and apart. DEFINATELY get a manual. Good luck!

Hi, I replaced the tranny in a 78 TT last year, the main thing that helps me is to carefully disassemble the motor and look at each piece. Make notes and take pictures because some photos are not very good in the manuels.Another thing that helps is to try to get as many parts,Gaskets ,etc.ready, so a long period of time won't pass between disassembly and reassembly.IT's real easy to forget how parts relate to each other. Have at it!
