Looks like you are on your way to a clean full resto job! Good work man!

Bill

Thanks for the compliment...I've been wanting to build a big XR for a while now, I enjoy turning wrenches ALMOST as much as riding.

These old XR's and XL's are great bikes...someone should start a "Save the Pig Foundation" and rescue all the neglected BRP's thats laying around.

Well I tried it and it doesn't work.....if you've got an extra I'm in need....if you have kept it as a spare don't worry about it, there's always eBay.

I know how the extra bits and pieces can come in handy.

I'll dig it out, we're talking about the bracket that bolts to the frame, and the footpeg mounts to it right?

Yes sir, thats correct.

Send me a PM with the cost + shipping and an address (is a money order OK?)

Thanks for the help.

those were nsr125 wheels, stripped from paint and coated with a cheap yellow varnish to simulate that nice goldy finish :-)

But the front wheel has broke in to pieces a few weeks ago, without any particular reason. I have posted some pics here, on the forum

I have converted my xl600r to singlecarb, using the head from XR600R with the decompressor on the camshaft (IT ROCKS!!). I had to use the carb insulator from a europeen NX modification caller SLR650, it looks to the opposite side than the one form XR (otherwise the carb doesn't fit). The exhaust is from ducati monster :-) the rear is from KTM 125sx.. :-) I'll try to take more pictures of my bike this weekend

I hope you didn't get hurt.......looks like the bike did though.

Hey guys,

I really appreciate all the offers on parts, but I found a really good deal on eBay and got most of the bits and pieces that I was missing.

garage.php?do=viewattachment&attachmentid=27432

I was worried that a sniper would get me at the last moment but I was the only bidder. ?

My "parts needed" list is now down to three parts.

1. Airbox (for dual carbs)

2. Rear shock + linkage (I have the "dog-bone")

3. Exhaust

Thanks again....

Michael

(I'll post more photo's just as soon as I make a little progress)

I forgot to tell you guys a funny story about when I picked up the XR chassis.

I got everything worked out to drive up and back in one day, I got a really good deal on the bike and was considering having it shipped. But the shipping was going to be a little pricey so I decided to drive my truck to Maryland to pick it up.

I would still come out ahead driving up instead of shipping but I drive a '96 Dodge 1/2 ton 4X4 with a 318 so I would end up spending $$$ on fuel.

Then my wife and I was talking and she said "can you fit the parts in my car".....hey it gets much better mileage (30+ compared to 13+/-) and its much more comfortable on long trips like that.

And you know what......THE BRP FIT!!!

?:lame:?

garage.php?do=viewattachment&attachmentid=27521

I know I'm not the first but I bet not many people have hauled an almost complete XR600 (no engine, but it would have fit) in the trunk of their car.

Everything went fine....except I wish I would have put the gas tank in a trash bag or something, the fumes got to me a little.

:bonk:

One more update.....I'm back at square one.

After fighting the swingarm pivot bolt for a couple of days I'm down to a bare frame again...its primered and ready for a fresh coat of white paint. After that I should be able to get this BRP together pretty quickly. But with family/work/and day to day stuff it's difficult to work on it much, I'll keep you updated.

Guys,

I received the parts from eBay today......and the right side footpeg won't fit, the bolt holes are too wide. ?

I guess that it must be from an XL or an older XR. Everything else looks like it will work.

So............it looks like I still need to find a set of pegs for the XR.

I'm also having trouble finding a shock, I'd like to get one off of a newer one (piggyback res.), would anybody be interested in trading a CR500 swingarm for a rear shock? (I bought it not long ago on eBay with the intentions of using it on the XL).

I'm finally to the point where I'm getting ready to install the engine (I need to clean and paint it first....).

I started getting the engine mounts out and cleaned them up and started to install them on the frame, and found something very depressing....

They are all "a half a hole off", none of the engine mounts are going to work. I'm either going to have to make them (I have so thick aluminum plate) or buy a set.

I guess when I said "the only thing I'm going to use from the XL is the engine" is true.

I was also thinking that I could use the rear shock and linkage temporarily from the XL, but guess what...it doesn't fit, the linkage that mounts to the swingarm is too narrow and the upper shock mount is too wide.

So....I've been scanning eBay for the parts I'm missing and there just doesn't seem to be allot of XR parts on there right now. It goes in waves on eBay, feast or famine I guess.

Heres the current list of "needed parts"......

1.Airbox & twin carb boot.

2.Rear shock and linkage.

3.Engine mounts.

4.Exhaust.

5.Footpegs.

This thing is going to nickle and dime me to death...........
