Clutch problem Please Help!!

I just picked up an 03 yz450f about 2 weeks ago. It had a little kind of whine noise when I took off. As I rode it more it began to get worse and worse. I thought it was my rear brakes dragging at first. Then it got to where whenever I would try to take off from a complete stop it is either engaged or disengaged if you know what I am trying to say. I cant have it half engaged half not for going real slow or taking off. I know the oil level is good and the oil still looks golden colored on the stick. Any ideas?? What should I do. It keeps getting worse. When I let off the clutch lever like REALLY SLOW there is nothing and then BAM it engages really fast and dies if its not at around 3000 rpms. It isnt slipping its like something isnt being lubed right or something. It grabs really bad

Im really sorry to say so far I am kinda disappointed with my new bike so far and I miss my yz250 2-stroke. I still like it but the 4 speed isnt my thing either

Sounds like your clutch basket may be notched or something. Best thing you can do right now would be to pull the clutch cover and have a look. Hope this helps.

That was an issue with the OEM '03 clutch. Assuming your clutch basket (including the cushion unit) and boss (the center hub) are in good shape, This GYT-R Clutch Kit will completely cure the problem, and make it easier to pull in the bargain.

The clutch is roasted.............break it down for visual on notching on basket and check plates -

The GYTR Clutch kit will fix most of it - also buy new clutch springs

Basket may need replacement

that sounds exactly like my '03 ... cured it with a hinson clutch (or you can drill your own holes in the stock hub).

a fly wheel weight fro DrD also helped tremendously.

I still have my pics that show the diff. between the stock and hinson hub (as far as oil holes go):

Are you guys sure this is what is wrong with it?? Will I be better going with hinson barnett or gytr I need a bargain clutch but if I HAVE to spend alot of money I just want the better quality. I want something that wont ever go bad as long as I have it.

Its weird because it grabs really hard and when I had my XR280 it would slip really bad and rev out TOTALLY THE OPPOSITE

full hinson will cost you a thousand - for everything - but will last longer than any off them

everything - basket, pressure plate, inner hub , all the plates

The guy that owned it before me said that it had a 2004 clutch in it also

If all I need are plates and springs will I be better off buying the hinson or the gytr clutch kit. I just want it to last long and I never want to hear the sound of a motor revving out in gear and not going anywhere like my XR280. I went through 3 clutch kits on that thing and it was a nightmare

You are going to hear opinions in both directions there. Just my 2c, go with which ever one is cheaper. Both are very high quality, and should give you good performance. Your expectation of never having to change the clutch may be unrealistic however as they do wear even when used as lightly as possible. They are moving friction parts and the fact of life is that they are going to wear out. Your riding style and proper use of the clutch will determine how long they last in most cases. OEM Yamaha is among the best you can get. Debating between Hinson and GYT-R is like deciding between a Rolls or a Bently. Either one.

Replace the whole pack, when you get in there you will need to inspect the basket and hub very closely for any defects. If you find any problems then you will need to replace those as well. At a minimum you should drill a few more holes in the hub as shown in the pictures posted earlier for better oil flow to the plates. Just my 2c, hope this helps.

I took out all the plates and they looked good. It all looked good and I put them back in and I rode it.......perfect! I guess my clutch does need to be replaced though. I guess it was just the plates unless the guy who put in the 04 clutch put something in there wrong. It slips now so I can Get a good start.
