Just installed a FMF Q2 on my 05 YZ450F..

Recommended Posts

The bike still has a stock 165 main jet in it. Heading out tomorrow to tune on it with the new pipe. Anyone out there have jetting info with this pipe? FMF's website shows 2004 jetting with a 162 main, but nothing out a 2005. Called FMF today and was told try a 170 main. So, I would like to hear from someone that has a Q2 if possible. Any info would be helpful...

I can go back and forth between my Q2 and the stock silencer on my 06 and the same jetting works fine for both.

My bike is a LOT quieter with the Q2 of course and power seems pretty close to me. I'm judging that based on a step up out of tight corner that I've taken with both silencers. I almost think some people dont feel the Q2 runs as well simply because it is so much quieter.

Went out today and rode from the town of Live Oak to the Gridley track, and didn't change a thing. She runs great with stock jetting! Heading to Stoneyford next weekend to camp. I'm legal up there now and don't have to worry about Rangers or starting fires... Great pipe! ?

You guys were wondering about what the Q2 (this one's a TiQ actually) sounds like, read what I posted here...

Thread about best sounding exhaust.

BTW, repacking is easy. I would buy one of the fancy FMF repack kits with the stainless screen and fiberglass weave that you wrap around the core first.

so you don't think it quieted the bike down all that much?

Oh sure it did, the stock silencer tests at around 100db, 97.4 is way quieter. It just doesn't have that choked-up sound that most 96db pipes have.

FMF worked on making it quieter at 4-5k rpm and not so much at higher rpms and throttle openings. It has a lot to do with the design of the end cap and how the exhaust pulse bounces around in it. At higher flow rates I think it doesn't have a chance to bounce back the pulse and just blows right through. WAY better design than just putting a cork (restrictor, reducer, screen or whatever) in the end until it gets quiet enough to pass the test. At high flow rates the cork idea is horrible as far as power goes.

well doesn't fmf advertise something like 93db, so if it is giving off close to 98 than i would not be happy. i was thinking something like as quiet as a wr pipe but i guess not.

My friend got a stock WR pipe, put it on his YZ426.

Took out the stock baffle and put a PMB baffle in.

leaned the pilot one size, the needle 2 positions, and haven't

touched the main yet, and the bike is great. It made the power

more linear and smooth (not so explosive and tracks great now).

And QUIET, really quiet.

I have the Q2 and is way louder.

Everything Motobark has said is true to a T.

Thanks, that was nice. Not sure I'd say EVERYTHING though, nobody's perfect!

I'm pretty sure when I bought my TiQ it said 96db right on the box. Remember that the blue bikes always seem to be louder, on a CRF450 a Q2 would probably test at or below 96db. If you listen to my bike in the video it's definitely not quiet like a stock WR or something like that, but it's not obnoxious either.

I would have to say the bike at a idle is quiet compared with the stock pipe, but she seems to be just as loud when on the throttle. Not to sure about the 93db level fmf has on the website. 93db must be on another bike. I picked this pipe because I was told the rangers see the big Q and leave you alone.. I'll find out up at Stoneyford this weekend.

You nailed it- that's exactly why I bought one. I've built my own pipes for years, I've made some awesome ones that make power and aren't loud. Even though the pipes I made would pass the 96db test, it was always a battle convincing the rangers that they were quiet and spark arrester legal. I even had to carry around the test procedure rules to make sure they did it right, since most of the time they don't. Same bike, same pipe, one weekend it would pass fine and the next it would fail badly because they used the wrong rpm or didn't test at the right angle.

Since I bought the TiQ I've never been pulled in for testing. (And I ride Hollister a lot.) It's like you've heard, they see the big Q and don't even question whether it will pass or not. They didn't even want to waste their time testing it when I rode over and asked them to! That's why I bought the Q, for the peace of mind. I bought the titanium version because the weight savings was a bigger deal for me than the added cost.

Hey Motobark, I notice the bike running a little hotter with the Q pipe on. I'm getting allot of blue around the header. Going to ride Riverfront tomorrow night and going to take a 170 main jet with me to try out. Did you make any changes, or notice your bike running a little lean?

I'm running 165/45 with good results. (I'm also running a Vortex ignition which seems to like leaner jetting.)

I wouldn't worry about the blue pipe, it's pretty much normal whatever the jetting is. Even if your main is a little lean, if you're doing a lot of track riding I wouldn't worry about it. You should be safe running lean on top as long as you're not doing desert or a lot of extended high speed stuff.
