super killer Honda Rally . Dakar / Baja bike site

Recommended Posts

I have no idea why, but some of those pics reminded me of when I was a kid, racing in 1989 or so, when I had a KX125 with purple frame, neon green plastic, with kawi green spider webs on it. And EVERYONE WORE NEON!!!!!!!!! We were soooooo cooooooollll!

thanks for sharing.

I was in Paris in 85 and 86. Saw some of that generation on display.

Those big Hondas and the Tenere generation Yamahas where the shiznit.

Cool to see the evolution of technology. Great site.

Theres a site with weird Husqvarnas and Ducatis and Gilera and other weird brands from the same era. '80's Dakar stuff was whacky.

Some of the side stands are on the right side, what's up with that?

I noticed that, muct have been a pit stop thing or maybe just a weird factory bike after thought, but the factories don;t have afterthoughts do they! Im going to do my old desert racer like the Honda XLs on that site, the motors about the same allready, just need to do graphics and have the suspension rebuilt and some other cosmetic stuff....

Pong and Johnny, I beleive that bike you are refering to is the EXP2, a 400cc two stroke experimental bike Honda built and tested that was supposed to be cleaner than 4 strokes of the same size. It was but from what I remember it was heavy, expensive and underpowered. It doesn't look any of those things in the pictures though, I may be talkin outta my ass here, anyone else know?

I guess Im not too far off, found this...

Big Red has designed and built a race-winning two-stroke prototype that has emissions comparable to a four-stroke. Named the EXP-2, this bike has demonstrated the possibility of a rebirth of the two-stroke engine as an environmentally friendly machine. ( from an early 90s publication)

check out this pic:

http://www.rallye-tenere.net/Bilder/Rallye_Website_neu/Dez_neu/honda_exp/EXP2_04.gif

that looks like a one piece fairing/tank setup on a 650R (the red/black bike behind the that 2smoke nightmare).

i'd love to find something like that for the 650 i'm dual sporting.

Unless you break into THAT place pictured, you won't! But you can build something very close. There are allot of faring canidates out there in MC boneyards, that would be a great project, of course youd need a tank like the 8 galone on my Desert XR630R....the tank in my avatar.

I believe you are correct, ashame that the bike didn't do as planned.

Yeah, If honda wold have brought it out as a Dakar Ralley replica they would have sold a gillion of them. I read it was slow, and got pissy fuel mileage, and heavy for a 400 2 stroke. I remember it had a catalytic converter or something like that in the expansion chamber too.
