Magnetic oil drain bolts.

Recommended Posts

I got an '05 WR450, and was thinking about a magnetic oil drain bolt.

From the posts I read when searching, seems people get little or no metal stuck to the magnet when they change the oil. Is this because the oil passes through the filter before it goes past the magnet?

Would it be better to get one for the sump or for the frame? Or both?

Maybe an oil flow diagram might help, if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Turismo the filter will catch the fine stuff but if you have bigger pieces that get loose hopefully they will fall to the bottom and get picked up by the magnet. Otherwise they could get tossed around enough to find their way back in to the gears or plug up an oil passage. The last time I changed my oil I found three pieces of metal about an eight of an inch long stuck to the magnet. Every thing appears to be working fine but my next task is to try and find out where they came from before I have a failure. Bottom line is thanks to the magnet these pieces are not floatiing around causing more problems.

Turismo,

I have only one in the botom of the motor. I occassionally get a sliver or two, but mostly its just a fine sludge of metal. Even without big pieces, the small cost of the mag. plug seems like a really cheap way to extend the lift of the internals without that extra metal grinding around in there. Worth every penny IMHO.

yeah, it's not spendy and it's better to have all those little pieces of metal out than in. I would get one if I were you.

Thanks msgbean, do you have one for the sump or frame?

I just have one in the bottom. One time I had a lock washer come off the primary gear. It did get chewed up but when I took the engine apart all the chunks were huddled around the magnet.

Sorry for bringing up a old thread:bonk: I thought this was worth it and wanted to share my happiness:ride:

I did my first oil change since installing the magnetic drain bolt and would recommend to everyone who doesn't have one to put it on their wishlists.:worthy:

These bolts are amazing. I never imagined so much magnetic particles/dust would be there.:D

Back in July I wrote the above quote. In September I finally found out what those pieces were when it starting slipping out of third gear. They were pieces of the lugs on third gear that mesh with and engage fifth gear. So I had to replace 3rd gear, 5th gear, and the shifting fork.

Just came across a combo set with a magnetic drain and frame plug. They claim it's stronger than a regular ceramic magnet. Anyone try these? Seems like a good price. If it fits the 250 it'll fit the 450 too won't it?
