Don't get the SRC rack. The handles broke off the first time I tried to pull my bike out of a mudhole. Kind of a pain to install, mounting holes didn't line up all that good. Check out the archives.

I had the same dilema as you, so I decided to make my own rack from mild steel tubing. It looks pritty good, and is braced from the bottom. Hope the pictures show up, so you can see.

Roadwarrior, nice job! Do you have any sketches or plans that I could copy?

I don't have any plans. What I did was first bend up some copper pipe into shapes until I was happy. Then I bent up the steel tubbing to match the copper pipes I bent by hand. Since I don't have a tube bender, I used a small pulley mounted in a vise. I would heat the tube with a tourch, and bend it arround the pulley a little at a time to avoid kinking. It worked great, and the tube looks mandrel bent. The mounts at the seat bolts are made from larger diameter tube with a washer welded at one end. Make sure to fishmouth the end for a nice tight fit so that the welding will be easier. Just take your time, and if you mess it up try again from the copper patterns you made. The rack cost me next to nothing to make, and it looks better than the billet racks.
