Started putting on my IMS today... Got a few questions.. theres 2 hoses on the stock petock. I'm assuming the smaller 2nd one is a vent. Whereas the IMS has the vent from the top of the cap.

What needs to be done with this line? it goes back into carb or something. Do I need to get another longer fuel line and connect this to the top cap?? or just run this one back of somewhere out of way and get another shorter piece for the top to run somewhere? or do they need to be connected?

Any quick responses would greatly be appreciated, as I'm in middle of installation and waiting response before continuing..

Also do you usually keep the front stock plastic fairing for the tank? It appears to fit with the IMS tho doesn't fit up perfectly, but looks ok I guess? do you guys usually leave this off or on?

If your using the IMS petcock you can remove the 2nd hose and plug it on the carb side connector. I bought a pack of plugs at Kragen for $1.25. The stock petcock is vacum operated and thats the vacum hose. I chucked the plastic cover on the tank others, but others may have used it to protect the plastic of the tank???

The top vent off the fuel cap needs a hose and maybe a one way valve, both can be gotten at any moto store (all dirt bikes have this setup) for a few bucks. If you dont put a hose you risk water & dirt entering the tank via the hole on the cap.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info.. I went ahead and ordered a replacment petcock after reading the troubles of the IMS petcock, tho I did go ahead and mount it for now. It doesn't appear to be leaking. As far as the front fairing goes, I left it on for now, It doesn't fit perfectly. Tho I believe if I remove the thick rubber bumpers on it, it will fit pretty close. So I'll probably leave that on, just for looks and protection.. Just curious what others have done.. Thanks for the response..

Be real careful with the IMS petcock gasket, mine worked fine for about 2 weeks, before the gasket basically disintegrated to nothing and MT'd my tank on the driveway. I ended up using some Form-A-Gasket and it has held fine.

Well mine went on fine today and hasnt leaked yet, but after searching some on it on here and advrider, and after reading all the problems, I called Jessee and ordered a new petcock.. Which sucks because it was 70+ dollars just for a petcock which seems very high to me. But I was under the impression the petcock was defective in other ways as not fully cutting the gas off,etc.. So thats why I ordered the new one.. I may have misread some of that, otherwise I might have tried my chances on some gasket seal or something for the ims..

I used a gasket from Kragen and I have had no problems with the IMS petcock. Just did 8500 miles in a month and it never leaked. The aftermarket one probably doesnt feel as flimsy though.

Just use an "O" ring gasket instead of the flat gasket that comes with the petcock for the IMS tank and you won't have any problems. About $72.85 less than the Pingle.

I tried using both the supplied and aftermarket "O" rings on my tank, and didn't have any luck with either, so I am curious what size "O" ring you used.

I found one at an auto parts store that had the same inside diameter as the one supplied but was just a little thicker. When you use an "O" ring, do not use the flat gasket, just the "O" ring. Also, check for any burrs or irregularities around the hole in the tank where the "O" ring will seat and clean up if necessary for a good seal.

I just got my IMS this week. The directions say to use BOTH the flat gasket and the o-ring. However, the flat gasket has an oval hole which doesn't make contact with the entire o-ring. It just doesn't seem like it would seal properly so I like the idea of just using the o-ring. My tank doesn't have any burrs but it does have a depression at the hole into the tank. Doesn't seem like that will seal well either. Now that I'm writing this I think I should probably just send it back for a new one.

Now some other questions. With the vacuum line being plugged will I have to close the petcock whenever I turn the bike off? Also, this is a stock CA model. Any other issues that I might need to be aware of? Thanks.

The Pringle is definately a better petcock. I put the stock on with both seal and gasket, and mine didnt leak, but I jumped gun a little and ordered the pringle after reading some. But my stock never leaked. If I had to do over, I would save my $75 bucks for the pringle and make the IMS work. I'd put it on stock and use it, until it leaked. Then if I did, I'd make some kinda rubber gasket or something for it. Thats all the pringle comes with is 1 big thick rubber gasket.. But I've heard many people use the o-ring by itseal and not had any problems.

Its highly unlikely sending it back will do any good, just pro-long your installation.

One year later ...... Fat o-ring tip is good, as is the vacuum port cap. Used a piece of fuel line i had laying around for the tank cap vent, and routed it along the frame to dump out the side back in the tool kit area (no fuel on a hot pipe or head). Thanks for the info. Dick

this is probably moot, but i read the post after i installed my tank so i had followed IMS instruction and placed the o-ring and flat gasket on like they said (BIG mistake):applause: i should have known better you never double up on gaskets which believe it or not an o-ring is a gasket. well sure enough it started leaking after 3 days luckily i keep an o-ring kit at the house so i'm replacing it today. btw just got the new springs from jesse so those will also be on today:applause:

Man this site rocks...

I just discovered mine leaking today... aarrgghhh What are the 2 bolts threaded into? Is it just the plastic on the tank or is there metal inserts in the tank for the petcock to thread into?

this tank was on the bike when I got it so I'm not sure what was put in for the gasket... Does anyone know the size of O ring I need or should i just take the pee cock with me to the store to find one???

Thanks
D

I don't have experience with this petcock but standard Buna N (Nitrile) o-rings will quickly soften and swell in the presence of petroleum products. Look for Viton o-rings at an industrial supply store. They are more expensive but are much better for petroleum resistance.

I have 3 tanks through my IMS since install and 20% of that offroad. I used the stock "O" ring, got rid of the flat gasket, and used Super Sure Tack- gasket sealant #97 instead of the flat gasket.
finger tight the screws and let the #97 tack up a bit then light tighten the screws.
No problems and I do not expect any.

The oring I used on the IMS tap was a Yamaha part #93210-11073.Fit like it was made for the tap.
That said Im going for the Pingle tap as soon as I can save up the money for it.The IMS looks to be a very generic part IMHO.
