Noisy Akrapovic! anyway of quietening it down?

Recommended Posts

Greets all,

does anyone have any advice on quietening my Akrapovic silencer as it is way too LOUD? It's so noisy my mate refuses to follow me anymore as he's almost going deaf ? it doesn't have a low thump tone, more of a roaring growl and it's so bad i can't focus on my riding as i'm more concerned with the noise, as it's not a pleasant sound at all. I recently had a dent removed by a local exhaust specialist (Carbon Cans of Fleetwood/U.K) and whilst it was apart they said for a small fee they'd re-pack it too, but i'm pretty sure these pipes aren't supposed to be THIS loud? I recently returned from the Isle of Man T.T Races where my friends were saying that my bike was louder than most of the Superbikes and their 200 odd HP and full race systems and they're full-on Race bikes!!!!!!!!! ?

So i have come to the conclusion, either it's not re-packed properly or they are loud to begin with? either way, i gotta quieten it down or it'll have to go on ebay, as it won't be long before the police say "enough is enough, pull over!" :ride::banana: I nearly gave a poor guy a stroke today whilst filling his car up in the petrol station, i fired it up and he almost jumped 3 feet off the ground!!!!!! was funny afterwards when i thought about it, after i made my getaway :ride:

Has anyone else one of these full Titanium Akrapovic Systems and is yours very loud too?

I've re-packed my old FMF a few times with both the stringy stuff and the sheet type packing so i'm well capable of having to do that on this pipe, but before i resort to trying that, i thought i'd make some enquiries first :ride:

cheers all for any info given :ride:

I also have an Akrapovic on my WR 450 and i can say that is very loud! But there is an easy solution. You can order from the shop you bought the exhaust an FIM enduro 94db noise damper. It will quiten things down and there will be no need to replace your exhaust :ride:

As well as repack.

Packing lasts less than a year in these bikes, the exhaust is real hot in 4 strokes and burns and blows out the packing.

The silent sport packing is the quietest packing available, and it is easy to use.

thanks for that info guys. I'll look into the quiet insert as i don't think a re-pack will quieten it any as i've only ridden the bike for about 10 hours since it was done as mentioned above.

i'll get onto the Akrapovic website and see if can get an insert for it? the prob is, i bought it used on ebay and am not sure of the exact model etc, but i'll have a go anyway..

cheers :ride:

i've just been looking on their website and i have noticed the latter systems from 03 onwards have a different end cap to mine (02 WR426) maybe it's this that has quietened them down somewhat? I'm in the process of enquireing if there is a quiet insert still available for my series? as far as i can tell, mine is the Ti Evolution full titanium system, maybe the end caps are swappable too?

I really don't want to have to part with this pipe as i've always wanted an Akra but if i can't "shut her up a bit" she'll have to go to either a deaf person or a farmer who doesn't have to worry about making noise, he can then send his scarecrow to the unemployment heap too!!!!! :ride: he can then "kill two birds with one stone"...... (pun intended) :ride:

  • 4 years later...

Did you ever sort this out as my Akra system on my '03 WR450 is stupidly loud, so much so that it puts me off riding the bike. Was repacked last week too which made very little difference. Been watching the supermoto on TV lately and my bike is easily twice as loud as the race bikes. Even though alot of them seem to be running Akra's too.

Have just fitted it and it does seem to make a little difference to overall volume which is good but i still have a very harsh sounding exhaust. Have just spoken to Akrapovic again and they are 100% sure thatthey don't make anything that will silence my system. They recommend buying another!

Anyone know if the end caps on these systems are interchangeable? Maybe i could fit the end cap and spark arrestor from a different system.

I would question the method and/or material used in the re-pack. I done a KTM recently which had a sharp crack to the exhaust note. The re-pack cured that completely. I used an FMF kit.

Thanks, i might try and get hold of the right packing kit then. Sounds like that might be the answer. Not done one before so any tips?

Any recommendation on brand of packing?

Go for the blanket type, not loose wool. Check ebay for a 50cm x 80cm sheet at £6.75. It's as good as any branded packing. (paying for the name??)

Don't be tempted to overpack when doing it. The baffle & packing should be a 'snug' fit, you shouldn't have to squeeze it in. Tape the end with some scotch (masking) tape to help things along.

Sounds like the Akrapovic packing is toast so a repack is definitely in order.

Silent Sport is excellent packing (German made) but I don't agree its the quietest packing made nor would I agree if you said any particular packing is the quietest. There are so many factors that come into play during a repack (amount of packing is a huge one) that I think makes it next to impossible to say company XYZ has the quietest packing.

The biggest issue that affects sound quality in packing is durability. There is a US manufacturer Bristol Core (you can Google for URL) that has steel wool and packing combination including model specific pillows that make repacking much easier.

I called Bristol Core just last week for a repack kit for my neighbor's kid's bike and learned these steel wool/hi quality packing combos typically last in the 50 to 100 hour range depending on the type of riding.

Hi I have the same issue on a 2004 WR450 with a stainless Scorpion can it sound great but is way to over the top for off road use. I had a look at the db dawg but there is a curve to the inner pipe which I don't think will let it fit I have found another insert http://www.championmotouk.com/product-info-p.php?dB-Killer-Homolgated-Motorcycle-Cans-pid9614.html I'm going to have look at making some thing like this .The one they sale is for a 47mm pipe mine is a 40mm pipe.

I took mine apart to pack it and found it was almost empty! I had it packed at a shop less than 100 miles ago! Im guessing they never done it as it didnt sound any different when i got it back. Have now done it myself and the harsh bark has pretty much gone, it sounds a lot softer now.
