I'm just chimming in for a buddy of my who just dual-sported his '06 WR450F (he is having issues typing due to a broken hand... :bonk: . He got the dual sport kit from Trick Dualsports. I haven't seen his bike since he did the work, but I have seen pics and it is a sweet setup.

After he installed the kit, he got the lighting inspection done at a local dealership and then he found a dual sport friendly DMV. The bike is now plated.

I was presented the plate as a dealer option.
Oh yes-thank you.

everything you need right here: trick dual sport

The TDS kit is a great kit. The fit on the module behind the number plate is a bit tight. I used the stock headlight.

And Scotts performance sells a cool license plate bracket that mounts to the underside of the fender--the stock taillight bolts) for about $20 bucks.

My WR 426 had a plate on it when I bought it, but nothing else. While the trick kit is great, and Dale has a reputation for doing quality work and standing behind his stuff (and just being a smart dude in general), I opted to do it all myself. Not to save money, but because I'm a tinkerer. It really wasn't that big a job. You can order everything you need (except wire and connectors) thru the TT store.

Hey Birdy - Could you PM me (or post here) with the instructions on how to set up a kit. One of my WRs has a Baja kit but my second WR400 has a plate without a kit. I'd like to go the cheap route and set it up myself. Thanks.

Just got my plate yesterday and my final inspection for Pa. today. Took a minimum of work and a maximum of patience waiting for the state to do their thing. Its not hard at all and as fas as Im concerned well worth the effort.

The post by Rich in Orlando pretty much covers it...though I disagree with his comment about the combination switch. I have one that looks like that that I got from B-D (though you can order them from TT...they're made by K and S), and it has survived many, many crashes and continues to work well. I used a B-D LED taillight, K and S "Flush Mount V" Marker lights for turn signals, a K and S hydraulic brake switch, a Trail Tech Regulator/Rectifier, and a small 12v 2000mAH battery that I bought from Fry's electronics. I initially used the stock headlight and added a spade connector for the hi-beam to the connector (it's already a three prong connector, but only has 2 contacts installed...same witht he taillight, the wire for the break light terminates inside the wire harness...but it is there!), but have since switched to an Acerbis DHH. See pics in my garage.

I picked up a Baja Designs kit second hand from someone after they decided not to install it.
Works great.

The WR is a very easy machine to make street legal (in Texas).
You don't need to spend the bucks on all those dual sport kits and such.
You already have a tail light and headlight, use those.
Get a 12 horn, and a rear brake switch, dp tires, a piece of Al for a license plate bracket and a LED licence plate light (walmart). Also you need a horn switch and maybe hi/low headlight switch with hi beam indicator light and you can get a handlebar mouted switch assembly to keep it clean on the handlebars. See my "list of mods" to see what I did to my wr250f to help you out ...... and note my quick release license plate bracket .... you have a fun bike, but it'll be even better with a plate on it. enjoy!
btw, I'm still looking into what speedo I'm going to someday install ......
trailtech has some interesting units, but I also do enduros and would like to have an enduro computer (ICO), but that's more than I got to spend presently ...... so the debate goes on till the time is right ......

I just bought a wr from texas. It was already registered. So I just took the title to dmv and verifyed the vin and registered it, no inspection. I was lucky.
