2003 vs. 2006

Recommended Posts

ok, heres the deal, i could pay $8600 for a 2006 yz450F, OR pay $4800 for a 2003. the 2003 looks to be really nice and it has very low hours.

could(is there any chance) that i would be as happy with a 2003 as i would with the 2006?

i plan to everything to get it to handle good(suspension, triple clamps, any thing else?) then of coarse cosmetic.

you must realize i don't have unlimited funds, and need to buy a truck in the near future. racing most diffenity is not my number thing, i just rip around and have fun. what do you think?

thanks for any replies :excuseme:

you could buy a new yz 250 for 4800 , an 03 yz 450 in mint shape is 2000-2500 max..hell come on over I know of 2 of them now.. a 250f is actually worth more than a 450 .. and by the way if youve never ridden much before a 03 yz 450 is about the worst bike to buy in my opinion .. o buy an 05 yz 250 f for 4000.00 or a lightly used 06 for under 5k they are almost a yr old already..

You guys are missing the fact that he's spending Canadian dollars. Still, I got mine for $6600 OTD in California, which would be about $7400 CDN. Might be time for a trip to the states.

Nevertheless, as the owner of both, no. Not only no, but hell no, no f****** way. The difference in the two bikes is more than night and day, it's like 10 years of motorcycle evolution went on in 3. Sure, you could get a truck AND an '03, and then you'd have two trucks. It's not quite that bad, but it's closer then you'd guess.

Even with the triple clamps (which are not being given away last time i looked, and are frankly rather hard to find), the '03 is not on the same lap with the new one. The suspension on the stock '06 is already far better than any of the best Enzo jobs I've ridden on an '03/'04 as it is. And there's nothing you or anyone will ever be able to do to make the bike have that light feel the '06 has...nothing.

As far as power, the '03 is a lot of fun, and it's very impressive. It's a good laugh to watch your buddies' faces when they come back after riding it for the first time. But it isn't nearly as useful as it is frightening, and the simple fact is that a good '03 with a pipe will squeeze out 48-49 hp, while a stone stock '06 with jetting will produce 50 at 5000'. I don't know who started the whole horsepower thing, but it's BS. The idea that the '06 is soft is a total illusion.

No, no way. You worked all that time with one goal in mind, and it was a job well done, and a good goal to set. Don't let them turn your head. Oh, sure, I'm still as fast on my '03 as I was, but I was faster on the second lap on the '06...and it was a lot more fun.

grey, you usually are right, but come on when I bought my 06, I was like where is the WHAM that the 03 had? Remember? I guess the new bike is just totally deceiving, but the older yz's hit so hard.......I really do miss it... I hope yamaha puts that two stroke hit back in it!

i like the no big hit factor, that's why i got rid of the two stroke. i had never even rode a four stroke before i bought my 06 yz450f(sure hoped i hadn't made a mistake) and the first time out after like three turns on the track i was a believer. this bike has in 4 weeks already made me a much better rider. i definetely wouldn't go back to a two stroke or something older. yamaha definetely did their homework on the 06. :excuseme:

I was wondering when we would see a ride report from you Grayracer. :bonk:

And I totally agree with everything you just said. :excuseme: The difference is that I didn't let any of my friends ride my '06 and I kept teling them that there was very little difference in the new bike. I told them it was all cosmetic and I pretended it was all a dramatic increase in my ability that was smoking them on the track. I don't think they believed me.

I also have both - there is no comparison..the 06 rocks period. That is why I turned my 03 into a BigBore 480......Now it is just plain fun to roost everyone and see the pale faces of the folks that ride this beast...white knuckles and all! :excuseme:

Not sure if those prices are in dollars or canadian...but that is too much to pay....come south with your truck....I see 06s going for 5500-5800 OTD

i really like the way you pharsed that last sentence gray :excuseme:

thanks for the replies guys :bonk:

all the dealers have them for $7600. i called 3 dealers yesterday, 2 had one in stock, the other could order one in for me.

OTD means after tax, for 5500 you take home a YZ450F?

this has got me thinking, what hassles are there bringing a bike across the border????? :excuseme:

My fellow Americans don't realize YOU as a Canadian will have to pay taxes on that rig whether you buy it up there or down here in the states or through the TT store. Go ask this question in the town square area and see if your fellow Canadians can help you out.

Ah yes, you are quite right, Grasshopper. I don't know exactly where, but I seem to have, how shall we say, F*d up. $6600 USD should be $7986 CDN (@1=1.21)

OTD means "out the door" and is the real bottom line price. Sale price of the bike was $5800 USD. I've heard of sales as low as $5900 OTD in Wisconsin. You might call some dealers in North Dakota or Minnesota, and look into the particulars of importing your own.

Gray, I know this from working deals on hockey gear north of the border. They have to pay 'import' taxes on just about everything and I'm thinking there is NO way he's gonna get a US model bike properly reg'd in Canada without the tax man knowing.

Anytime I ship north of the border I put 'gift' or 'defective' on the box as they tax you on the value of the shipped item :excuseme: It's total shit. I thought NAFTA was supposed to stop that kind of problem. It's really screwing up the easy flow of goods across our common border.

No, NAFTA was intended as a way to facilitate the smuggling of drugs and people across the Mexican border without inspection.

Crap, now you got me started.

I wasn't aware that kind of thing went on in the hinterlands of San Diego county :excuseme::bonk:

ahh for once i'm right :bonk:

$5900 x 1.2 = $7080. + fee's for getting it across, gas/shipping bill. still would be cheaper i suppose.

i'm going to Minnepolis this summer???? :excuseme:
