I'm looking for an external/aux gas/fuel bottle to carry as a reserve on some of my longer trips on my 03'WR250F. I recently saw in a superbike race, a guy with a small metal bottle, for topping off a tank maybe? Is that a regular backpacking water drinking bottle? And can that be used for holding gas? I'd figure I'd run the bike tank down till I can empty the aux bottle tank, then have less to carry on my person ...... Is this a plan? Anyone do this?

In a recent DS trip through some gnarly sections up here in the mountains of BC, we had nine guys, some with big tanks and some not. One guy brought some of the small metal bottles for water, but they leaked fuel everywhere. My aluminum camping fuel bottle( looks just like the water types) didn't leak a bit, and works well to hog fuel from the boys with the 25L acerbis tanks.

...... Is this a plan? Anyone do this?----Thats exactly what we do, and it works fine, just make sure you buy the bottles designed to hold fuel.

Alot of people use the 32oz MSR Fuel bottles for spare gas. Nalgene used to make a real nice fuel bottle but I guess its discontinued.

If you go to www.maier-mfg.com, go to products, dirt, universal, and they have a 2 qt super jug product #02002 for $38.17. It mounts on your handlebar crossbar and will carry gas or water or whatever. It doesn't say gas on the web site but I have one on my 600 and it is on the jug. I've used them for years and they work great. Hope this helps.

There's a product for WR's that goes behind the L side number plate that holds a lot of gas. You may have to re-locate or ditch your overflow to use it though. I'm not sure - I never really investigated it.

We use the platypus bags. Weighs only a couple of grams and holds 2 litres. Easily conforms to the bike on a rear or front fender or can even be strapped to a backpack. Weighs virtually nothing when empty and is very sturdy and does not leak a drop. I've had very good success with these.

go to starbucks and get a coffee togo bag, empty out the coffee and fill with gas, trrough it in a backpack it will hold a little over a gallon and will not break!!!! leave some air in it so if you crash it will compress a little and not leak! lots of people are doing this and it works great. if your real nice sometimes they will just give u the bag\. Starbucks or Noahs bagels has em!!!

Yup, these two types of tanks are pretty nice,
so is that plastic maier bottle,
and all three are something I'll look into with detail ....
maybe have to get all three!

The ascerbis Front panel and side panel are also cool ideas but,
I need my headlight and overflow bottle ......
though those would be great ideas for a YZxxxF though!

Come the fall I've got a beach run from the Rio Grande River,
then north to corpus christi and beyond, as much as possible on the beach though ...... and there's a few ferry crossings I've got to schedule with my fishing buddies ..... should be an interesting ride .......
..... that is if hurricane season doesn't blow my idea out of the water!

Then I want to ride Big Bend .......

These rides take fuel, and that's what these tanks will let me do.
Thanks guys!

Keith, are those caps on the MSR bottles plastic?
They sure look like they would break off .......
How are they holding up for you?
