Need a little clutch help here.

Recommended Posts

My 06 likes to creep when the clutch lever is held in and the transmission is in gear. I took the clutch plates out and they seem fine (though I do not have much experience rating clutch plates) however, the basket does have some notches on the fingers.

Should I just replace the clutch plates and go from there? or, replace the basket, or both?

Thanks for the help.......

PS. don't ask me about lever adjustment, i did try to cure the problem adjusting the cable, no luck!

Well you can file down the tangs for a quick fix. That will get you riding while you order a new basket. The filed down tangs will tend to groove again as the space would be wider and the plate bang back and forth. People seem to like the Barnett with the steel inserts but some have worn those out too. I have a Wiseco in my CRF. The rate of wear all depends on how abusive you are with the clutch. You may want to review your gearing chioce.

Notice ALL of the Pros use Hinson, take the hint. You can file your existing basket but the hardening will be removed and it wont last long (relative to clutch use). That is what is causing your dragging. The plates are not allowed to return to their unloaded position, probably getting cocked in the grooves in the basket.

And how much do you use the clutch on your 450? If you are not a clutch abuser -

Try a different oil -

When I went from Yamalube 4R to Amsoil Synth - it made all the difference in smoother shifting, finding neutral etc...

If you try to ride your 450 like a 2smoke - you abuse the clutch and it is time for a full Hinson set up....basket,hub and pressure plate -

and stop fanning that clutch so much! :excuseme:

I have been running Ams-Oil since break-in. I do use my clutch a lot, but my other bikes have no clutch issues.

I guess I will replace the friction plates with a new set and see if that cures it. I don't think the basket is grooved enough to cause the plates to hang.

how tight is the lever? how much free play i mean...

looking at the little arm on the engine, what position is it in? meaning how far to the rear of the bike is it turned clockwise if you arent touching the lever at all.

Don't you WANT to always use the clutch?

No, only if absolutely necessary such as coming to a stop possibly downshifting. I run a Rekluse and never use the clutch. It really isnt needed unless there is a big difference in the speed you are going and the gear you are shifting to, whether up or down. Just lift the throttle ever so slightly at the moment of the shift to unload the gears regardless of auto or manual clutch. :excuseme: Also with the big bore 4 strokes the power is almost always available so fanning isnt necessary unless you were in the wrong gear entirely.

Oh. Ever since I started riding I was taught to use the clutch when downshifting, upshifting, and of course hard hard braking.

So I don't need to use it when I upshift or downshift (unless there will be an extreme RPM shift)? Just let off the throttle and upshift/downshift?

Hmm...Interesting.

thats a whole different ball game there..

like for upshifting, i keep it pinned and use the clutch to shift.

Ive been taught letting off the gas to upshift, which lowers engine rpm, is slower.

Downshifting, i use the clutch im some situations, others not...depends.
