Plating - How much in CA?

Recommended Posts

well its nearly impossible i woulda looked into it before you put a kit on it if i recal there was somewhere on www.dmv.ca.gov about a loophole but you have to get written permission from the manufacturer that it is emissions approved for street secondly you must get written approval from a sherrif in your county and must meet strict regulations along with a battery to power the light for at least 20 min and a metal tank along with DOT tires. goodluck.

Some DMVs are still letting bikes through, but not many (legally they shouldn't be). Get a light inspection from your local dealer or otherwise, then you need to hunt down a DMV that *may* let you through. If you go to the DS section, there is a very long post with several mentioned DMVs. However, it may require driving up to 6 hours each way to do it.

Thats all I did and went off to my nearest DMV with my slip of paper, They "the DMV" checked my vin#, had me turn on the tail light, beep the horn and pay.... as I left with my new temp. reg. in my wallet. :D:applause:

ah i never said the DMV said you need metal tanks the sheriff that inspects your bike may say you need a metal tank, and dot tires.

did a sheriff ever tell you you needed a metal tank? If he did ask him to cite the code. For a California plate the California Highway Patrol should be inspecting the bike, not the local yokel sheriff. Have you ever gotten a plate in CA because it sounds like you are making all this up?

Yes, it is a pian to go through,

They have changed thet law again. If the bike is green sticker and has the smog tag on the bike it can be registered. There are bikes still being registered that are 2002 and older that are green stickered. Newer have to have a smog sticker. We have a friend that plated his 05' CRF450X four months ago. I have two xr400's (2004 and 1998) and a 2003 XR650R all plated California. None have a steel tank. I got them checked at John Burr Cycles for $80 a piece, instead of going to the CHP. I was told no you can't at the DMV, then sent my wife to try again in Banning and then it was, bring them in to be checked and she got the plates. You just have to keep trying. There has to be a battery to power the blinkers, horn, running lights, brake light and head light. Not 20 min. Just bright and long enough for all to be checked. None of mine had all DOT tires or Metal tank. They have never made be start any of them.

There appear to be 2 critical points in the process. First is the VIN. If it has a "C" or a "3" at the 8th position, it's a red sticker bike and no plate. The second is which emissions box checked on for 343 (aka Application for Title or Registration). On the second page of that form, Verification of Vehicle, is a section labeled "Emissions label indicates." It has 7 boxes. If "None", or "Vehicle meets California standards for off highway vehicles" is checked, then no plate.

The key is that label. Some DMV's screw up and check the wrong box. If the wrong box is checked no plate. If the wrong box is checked and you get a plate by mistake, in a few weeks you will get a letter from Sacramento demanding the plate back. I just registered an old street bike, a 1980 CM400T. The label was painted over and "none" was checked on the form. I got the plate, then a letter from Sacramento demanding the plate. It took two weeks on the phone to get straightened out. I finally found the painted over label, but I had convinced them to make an exception for me by that time.

If the correct box is checked then you are home free.

  • 4 weeks later...

I finally received my plate yesterday. Here are the costs:

light inspection - free

vin verification - free

registration - $190, ouch.

insurance - $75/year

With the DS kit and other incidentals, the total cost came to just under $800. There were some problems with the vin verification. My engine number did not match the title, which I understand is common. That had to be corrected. Another hiccup is that the DMV issued tags with the plate that expired the same month. I still cant figure out why they did that but it was corrected as well. I rode the bike to work today and at first I felt kind of strange riding a dirt bike on the street but I soon got use to it. One thing I did not particularly like is that I am running dirt tires which feeds allot of vibration to the rider. I may switch to a friendlier street tire in the near future. All and all life is now good...

YEAH!!! Good job Jon! Welcome to the world of Duel-Sport.

Please heed this advice if you will:

#1 Rule = Cars Don't See You!

#2 Rule = Look both ways for red light runners at intersections before engaging clutch!

#3 Rule = Refer to Rule #1!

The rest is all fun in the sun, enjoy.

I believe the metal tank is a federal requirement for the manufactures... I understand that most cops would not pull you over and or write you up for a plastic tank... but they will for those third gear wheelies! :worthy:

Take a look at the KTM factory dual sports. Thay all have plastic tanks and passed the EPA smog requirements for road bikes. The metal tank requirement is a myth. If a cop is going to write a ticket it would be a state law that they are enforcing, not a federal one.

The tank deal has got to be a myth or a really old defunct law that people refuse to forget.....most new streetbikes have plastic gas tanks under the seat or under that nicely painted cover that looks like a gas tank...including the nice new BMW's that CHP and most other revenue inforcement officers roll around on.........http://www.bmwmotorcycles.com/pdfs/spec/k1200gt.pdf

HDPE stands for "high density polyethylene" (better know as plastic)

If you are lucky enough to have a plated dirt bike just use your turn signals and ride responsibly. Then the cops will likely never have a reason or desire to check your tires for the DOT imprint, or turn signal length, or headlight wattage, or....etc.

the big problem seems to be the CARB sticker..... Why can't we get the bike "smogged tested" and then get an On Road CARB stricker???? :D

I'm sure that you could. The only problem is that testing costs at least $20,000, if not $50,000. It's a lot cheaper just to go buy a Husky or KTM that already has the sticker.
