Valve adjust

My 06' XRL is a few weeks old.

I have 700 miles on it now . The oil has been changed 3x's

and filter changed once so far.

When do you guys suggest i check/adjust the valves ?

everything sounds good and runs fine.

Its more like 2 hours, than a few minutes...you do have to remove the seat and gas tank etc, before you can access the head.

I wouldnt worry until 1500mi.

then maybe every 3-4000mi intervals

Yeah, but those hours pass by in the blink of an eye because you are havin so much fun. They say to do it at like 250, 1000, then every 3K I think.

i don't have the manual , but adjusting valves is no prob for me.

I have an XR650R, I checked valves at 29.000 kilometers the first time: NO NEED to adjust them....

I did mine at 1000, took less than 30 minutes, and I do them every 1000 mi. I know its an over do, and they stay right on with very little adjustment, but its also a good way to get a heads up on premature wear, watch for one being way out.

I have been told to not "disturb" valves if they are OK!

So I did and after many kilometers with XRs and KTM LC4 I never had problems!

The less you touch mechanical part the better it is.

Of course you have to do what it is necessary.

It's been that way for me. With my old 750F 16 valve I only had to change a shim once in the 25K that I had it though. Every thing else was diff.

i just completed the first valve check/adjust.

they were almost perfect , just tightened the intakes a little.

They were just about perfect anyway.

Very easy job , hardest part is the seat and tank

Just did mine on my '02 XR last nite. First time, took about an hour with my daughter "helping".

Intakes were tight as were exhaust. No idea how many hours or miles on the bike, but it didn't seem as though the access covers were off before.

If you change your oil regularly and ride mostly street, probably not. Full-synth does allow extended intervals between oil changes, though.

I run full-synth 15W-50 (non-"EC") with excellent results. I don't have any verifiable proof, but by my "seat-of-the-pants-ometer" I think the motor runs cooler & shifts more smoothly.
