Do you need a spring compressor to swap it?

It is under compression, but it's from the big nut on the shock. When you undo that nut the spring completely unloads before it comes off. No spring compressor needed. After you install your new spring, you adjust that nut to get the sag right.

yup he is right no spring compressor needed. also a little trick that makes changing it easier is one you loosen the locking nut just grap the spring and spin that instead of trying the spin the nut on top. the spring with it's little tension will spin the nut for you and you can get a way better grip on it.
