1998 Yamaha yzf450

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I am a play rider, i ride mx practice, field and woods, I usually ride a 03 crf450. However i bought a new house so sold it 2years later (at a profit!) and bought a 1998 yamaha yzf400, (the white one).

I picked it up sat and rode it for the first time sunday, while hungover (im irish) lol! In a grasstrack race. I found it very heavy, less powerfull, huge engine braking, didnt turn and was top heavy, I WAS FASTER ON THIS BIKE THAN ANY BIKE I HAVE EVER RIDDEN...WHY?? I love this bike.

Heres what I am looking to do,

I need advise on how to make her turn better.

Where I can get parts, secondhand or good value etc???

Looking for frame guards and graphics.

Any other tips and advise for maintanience and setup etc!

Im 5 102 and 170 pounds

Cheers

Thanks all

Wow you sound suprised. Houses around here were purchased for about 300,000 ten years ago and are now selling for 1,200,000

I found it very heavy
Sorry can't really fix that much
less powerfull
fairly simple fix
huge engine braking,
Slipper clutch
didnt turn and was top heavy
03 plastics will fix that,

EBAY

Clean oil, air filters, oil filters, and it will tick forever.

Thanks for the replys, I meant the bike not the house, Im an estate agent. I bought the honda with a blown motor for 2k with all new engine parts, i sold it for 3k two years later.

Are there many people still using this bike for racing? I am thinking of doing hare and hounds like gnccs, what mods can i do to stop her stalling in the woods/

Cheers

There is the Taffy Mod or my own KL Mod for the accelerator pump. The BK mod did not apply to the early FCR carbs.

I went to a 420 Big Bore kit, via Eric Gorr, on my WR.

I know there are lowering kits for radiators, but now days, our early YZF / WRF's are considered dinasaurs, and aftermarket stuff is fading into oblivion.

1. Get a flywheel weight

2. Use a smaller front or bigger rear sprocket (I run a 13/29 combo)

3. Turn the idle up a bit

It will do wonders for this bike :ride:

I do the same type of riding that you do on a yz 400. A great bike. I would definatly recomend a flywheel weight. Maybe zip-ty racing. I also retro fit a wr coolant overflow tank on mine. It did wonders for catching that runoff. And was an easy install

No reason to install one of these unless you're on the surface of the sun and love to let the bike idle....just get a 1.6 radiator cap inplace of the 1.1 that comes stock. KX500 cap works great. I never lost a drop in my WR after I did that.

Thats it PA you tell them...lol, thanks for all the replys.

I have just bought new graphics, seat cover, wheel bearings and a clutch cable, waiting for them to arrive. I think I will go with a fww also. Just to see how I get on. Should I replace the piston and rings just to be safe?

Yes, I would tear down the top end.

Check valve clearances first.

Write down your gaps, and upon disassembly, keep the bucket w/ it's shim. You will need to use the table to get the correct (new) shim if needed. Be sure the bucket and shim get back to the specific valve if came from.

Then, go ahead and check the cylinder & piston.

It is alot easier and cheaper to do this now, than wait for a catastrophic failure to force you to do it later. :ride:

I was talking to BUTTA the guy that was above me in my last post. He said after he put the radiator cap on his WR that he never lost anymore coolant. WR's can't lose coolant due to their catch tanks so I was trying to point out politely that they can't lose coolant but I guess some people didn't understand.

Yes, and I removed my "catch bottle" from my WR to make it more YZ like, therefore not losing any coolant was a success due to the change in radiator cap. Sorry for not spelling it out, some people need pictures drawn, I guess......
