The Perfect XR600R

Recommended Posts

Is that an original WP4054 front end.

I had a KTM600 years ago an 84 i think, with a rotax motor and drum front with the 4054's on it really strange.

If it stalled or crashed, starting was to say the least an "issue".

Wicked stuff man.

I recall reading some great stories about the days when big bore four stroke riders had to learn the "knack" as in the knack of starting the beasts.

From what I heard the older LC4s were bitches to start?

In the "On any Sunday" era you would see a lot of guys at a boghole kicking and kicking, today with a crf or kxf it can be the same.

Going fast in the dirt is not new but going fast with a safety margin is a recent thing.

I skipped the LC4's i had KTM's before them and after them,though the 640sxc and a few other KTM's are LC4 based.

The original tt/xt500 Yamahamma was a bitch to start if you dropped it on the left side i think it was.

The more things change the more they stay the same except when i crash now i don't bounce just a dull thud and longer recovery.

1991- rear disk, full-sized swingarm and cartrige fork.

1992- BNG

1993- 36 spokes at the rear wheel, stronger rear hub.

1994- larger diameter front hub and improvements to the cartrige fork.

1995-1997 BNG's

1998- improved exhaust valve material to run oxygenated fuel. Last mechanical change ever...........

1999- wasn't to be, then dealers revolted and Honda printed up a batch of XR600's with only the tank decal change from 1998.

2000- Red bike!! shared the Big Red glory in the lineup with the new 650r.

BTW- Honda's new 650r would (uncorked with hrc parts) put out 55hp at sea level, which, according to Honda, is more than Johnny Campbells' 96-99 $20k Xr600 Baja bikes put out. Ouch!

The six-honey is, however, the reliability champ of all off-road machines and that is good enough for most.

Detail changes are interesting. No other big bore has won as many GNCC champs - Summers won 8 on the XR and nil on the 650R. This was over the same period that Honda was for the most part getting its ass handed to itself by the big Kawak 500s.

When did Honda ask us to reduce the versatility by making the 650R the king of baja??

Yea, the one shown there is the W/P unit, when I bought mine that was a $1100 upgrade. I opted to stick with my Honda/Showa front end. Wasn't long before I regretted that decision.

And yes the big Rotax was a handful to start. It had a small window in the valve cover on the right side of the motor. And the kick start was on the left.

The deal was, you had to slowly kick it over until you saw the white mark on the upper timing gear just go past that window, then jump hard on the kick starter. If it didn't go, then you got to do it all over again.

If you felt brave, and decided to skip the cam window thing, then you risked the dreaded kick-back, when it mis-fired on the wrong stroke. I seen more than one person have their knee jammed up under the handlebar, when it would do that.

I do not know of anyone personally, but you might talk to Kieth at American Dirt Bike. He's the only one I've found who has much info about ATK prior to the Whites buying the company.

I know that I was told there was only 19 of these kits sold thru ATK.

Mine is the only one I've ever seen, the pics that I linked are a little different than mine, my seat does not extend that far up onto the tank.

That could have been one with the motocross body work on it, mine has the cross-country body work. (larger tank, Acerbis headlight / number plate)
