I put a new chain/sprocket combo on(15/45, awesome!), I am used to chain play on a streetbike so this is totally different.

The manual says to have an inch or so play on the chain with the rear tire off the ground. It seems ok but then I sit on it and it is as tight as can be.
Is this right?

No, it is not right. It needs to be loose enough so that it has just a bit of slack when it's at it's tightest. That happens when the suspension is most of the way compressed. Needs more like 1 3/4 slack with rear off the ground.

If it's too tight, it will cause lots of problems.
