Turn on gas
Set choke
Bring piston to TDC with kick-starter
Pull decompress lever and move kick starter about 1 1/2” past TDC
Let kick-starter return to top
Release decompress lever and kick firmly

Or you cal install a 03 auto decompress cam

Like bygd said.... get teh auto decompression exhaus cam! I have Hot cams version for my 01 WR 426. Now I can kick it over easier and faster. $180 investment, but worth it  :ride:

cold

(1) choke out
(2) Kick slowly down until the lever becomes hard to push (top dead center)
(3) Take foot off of kick lever (bring to top)
(4) Pull in compression release and nudge kick lever a hair past hard spot (top dead center.) then let kick lever come back to the top.
(5) My 400 likes 2 to 3 twist of throttle (this may vary)
(6) Remove hand from throttle and place on front brake cylinder as not to inadvertently give throttle while kicking.
(6) Kick firmly down through full kick range

Repeat if needed.

When hot no twists of throttle is needed
If starting after dropped hot start may need to be pulled.

I'm not sure about the 400 but unless you've done the BK mod the 426 has about a 3.5 second spray when you twist the throttle and if I did that it would flood for sure hot or cold

Its actually 1 1/4" past TDC :ride:

I couldnt start my 426 until I found thumper talk, but once you get the routine down, they start very easy. One other tip: if you ever flood your bike you can
1) pull your hot start
2) hold compression release in
3) hold throttel wide open
4) kick 10-20 times
5) start using the normal routine
