How hard is it to adjust the valves on an 04 450? Also how often do I need to do it?

Just to be safe you should check them about every 20 hours or so. Everyone has their own schedule.

As far as how to do it...use Motoman393's step by step guide here Adjusting YZF Valves

You will need a shop manual to reference to see if you are in spec and if not it will show you what shims you need to bring into spec. If you don't have a shop manual you can download one here YAMAHA MANUALS

my '00 426 still has the SS valves so I am probably not much help, but I have only had to adjust valves once since purchased (used a little over a year ago--I adjusted them the day I bought it). I check them once a month though -- about 15-20 hours riding time.

Call RHC http://www.ronhamp.com/ he can help you with that. Seems there are some variances in how the CRF heads are made. This causes an inaccurate valve spring rate. There is a theory that is makes the spring pressure too stiff because the spring seat is too shallow....causing the spring to be compressed too much. I am not going to recite all the technical junk.....just give Ron a call.
