I actually manage to take my carb off !!

Looking at the carb in the side of my toy before trying to remove it reminded me of
trying to get a pissed off cat out of a tight corner...you CAN do it but it takes a while and you finish scarred...

MUCH to my surprise it came off & went back in real easy. The trickiest part was the air box boot interference and the throttle cables.

Tip : 99 model and others ?? wedge the air box boot behind the frame. This keeps it out of the way allowing you to manouver the carb easily out of the manifold boot.

I put it straight back in as I am not quite ready to change the guts yet.

I guess it wont take much more than about 5-10 minutes to remove next time.

Question : how on EARTH do you clean that thing? I guess it should be SPOTLESS when you open it up for fear of getting crap in there. Although the bike is 'clean' from jet washing, there is a fine film of mud all over the carb, pipes, cables etc. I'm guessing I should spray with some cleaner & rinse prior to removal ? Any suggestions ?

Oh yeah....how do I stop spilling gas all over eth place once the carb is removed. All those tentacles seemed to spit gas at some time or another as I was looking it over !

i too took the carb off recently. did it the ssame way you did. but i turned off the gas and ran the bike out of gas in the carb. this keeps you from spilling so much. a little still comes out. when you are twisting it out of place. and clean is a must. do not do like i did and hve to do it 2 times cause dirt got in there. clean it before you take it apart.

Try using a long paint brush with semi stiff bristles and plenty of soap and water to clean the carb before removal. Helps in lot's of other tight spots as well.

i use carb cleaner on the outside with a old toothbrush to scrub the grime off. Then you can start removing covers and cleaning the rims of the covers. Once the outside and cover areas area clean, start taking out jets and spray carb cleaner in all the passaged (including the jets themselves). Let it sit for awhile, then do it again!

Finish with compressed air and put it back on. I always notice a nice performance boost after my bi-annual carb cleaning!

Thanks for the tips but I have a problem...
what is carb cleaner made from? I live in Switzerland and they have about 5% of the choice of specialist products such as these. Is it mainly Kerosene or ???? What can I use as a subsitute if I cant get hold of any?

I asked my dealer and he looked at me as if I was stupid !

Can I get away with a spray on (chemical/citric)wash off for cleanig the outside without damaging/interfering with performance.

Miss, two tips. There is a small float bowl drain screw on the left side of the bowl. An aerosol can of brake cleaner will work well. It evaporates quickly, and leaves no residue.
