i've got an 86 xr6r. when i start it there is a buzzing noise coming from the right side of the engine. down by the kick start. when it is cold it will last about 15 sec. when it is warm nothing. i think it is probably the kickstart ratchet. maybe the return spring has lost some it's spring? any ideas? tim

The XR650Ls often do this- consensus is its the oil pump (the sump-to-resevoir pump) backflow valve chattering because there's lots of thick, cold oil in the sump.

my 86 XR600R did it from day 1 never had a problem put about 20K miles on it, seemed to be oil valve buzz flutter as mentioned above.
