XL coil vs. XR - interchangeable??

Recommended Posts

will an XL600 coil fit a XR600 and will the wattage be higher because it is an XL coil? I am looking for a little more wattage for my XR and thought this may be an alternative to rewinding the coil.

Jon,

I had an '86 Xr600r that I put an '86 Xl600r stator in. I used it to provide more wattage to the battery I had placed on the bike for my street legal kit. I assume you mean stator and not coil. Well I guess it could be coil. It doesn't matter. But the stator/coil did fit. I hope that helps. Tony

Ressurrecting an old post rather than starting a new one. An XL600R Stator will go in an XR600R (84-90). But what about the opposite; will a XR600R stator go in a XL600R??? Ricky Stator said that their 200 watt XR600R (84-90) stator will not go in an XL600R (85). I want to know if anyone has modified it to work. Is it merely some clearance? or could it be an electrical recommendation? Any clues would be appreciated!

It should work no problem. The only issue is conecting to the wiring harness as I think the connectors are different. The stators core is interchangeable.

They will work all the way back into the 83 XR500, just a little rewiriing required. That should be done anyway since the higher cap. regulator should be installed at the same time.

So, I will need a higher capacity regulator, check. From browsing around here I think that some of the wire colors are different. What else do you mean by re-wiring?

It's the connectors. The XL has a bullet connector for the CDI exciter stator winding that is OK. The two lighting coils go through a 3 pin connector that does not exist on your bike. You have to cut it off and install some bullet connectors or whatever kind of connector that you want to use.

On the XL stator the yellow and pink wires are the lower power DC winding. You will need a DC regulator/rectifier and a battery for that should you want to use DC lighting. The white with yellow stripe is the AC headlight. The other side of that winding is grounded to the frame. You also need a "stronger" AC regulator for that winding as the XL stator is more powerful than what your existing reg can take. Actually it might take it as long as you never turn off your headlight, but it is marginal.

Looking into it a bit further... I need the AC regulator ($19 from Ricky Stator) and I need a regulator/rectifier. My regulator/rectifier has 5 wires going into it and the one from Ricky ($53) only has 4. I'm not sure, but looking at the wiring diagram it looks like one wire could be done away with. One wire goes the the positive terminal of the battery and another goes to the positive side of the bulb. These seem redundant. It seems to me that one output of the Ricky regulator/rectifier could be split and sent to both (in parallel). I'd call Ricky but their tech is our of town. Any ideas?

Then I need a higher wattage bulb (90/100), $10 from Ricky. So I'm looking at $80 more just for the 90/100W headlight vs. the stock 55/60W. And I could always do some more lighting upgrades down the road. does it sound worth it or should I just get the XL stator?

Well, I talked to the tech at Ricky Stator and I ended up ordering the XL stator. He said it would run their 90/100W bulb just fine. There is about 100W available on one of the circuits. That goes straight to the head light (no lights when the engine is off). And there is another output (sub 100W) that goes to the battery for the other stuff. And of course the ignition output...

I believe the XR stator has more power on the battery charging circuit (100W +). But I think you could get away with the stock stuff since you are not sending all 200 watts to the AC regulator or the rectifier/regulator, well I guess you could if you wanted... Physically the XR and XL stators are virtually the same. The wiring conections are different though. If you have any more questions I would just bag the TT thread and just call Ricky and ask for the tech, he is super helpful. Make sure you get the 15% TT member discount!
