Anyone try a Maxxis IT on an 06?

I need to ditch my stock front rubber, I hate that piece of crap and I was wondering if any of you have experience with the Maxxis MaxxCross IT front tire. I had an HT rear on my 426 and really liked it, but figured the IT would be better for softer/muddy stuff. Any opinions? PS I'm on a budget and can't afford a $60 Michelin tire... cheap but durable and works well is what I'm shooting for.

Cheap and durable... Sounds like you are a good candidate for a Sakura Dirt Shark. My dad has them on his WR250F and even after 30+ hours of riding they have barely started to wear. I am not sure where you can find them because I just saw them at my local shop. Since you are on a budget you will really like them because a front tire is like $30. Rear tire is like $40.

This is a side question relating to the Maxxis I/T rear. Is it as stiff on the sidewall as the Dunlop 756? I had the misfortune of putting one of these on last weekend and I have never felt a tire as stiff as this one, and I have put on at least 3-4 D756's in the past. I litterally had to use 2 tire irons just to seat 1-2 inches of the tire onto the rim. After pinching 2 tubes and making my knuckles bleed in a few spots I said "F it" and took it in, I'll let it be someone else's problem that gets paid to do it for a living! ? Thanks.

I'd like to second ripntear...I found the IT front to wear damn well but IMO tended to push a little b4 it hooked up. The SI is just an excellent front that is not that expensive and doesnt push on me at all.

I still run the IT in the rear...I'd like to try the Desert IT though, heard great things about the wear on the desert IT.

I agree with that. As much as I rave about the IT rears, I can't really say as much for the IT fronts. The rears give very good traction and wear extremely well. The IT front does neither of those things for me. I haven't tried the SI personally, but people say...

I have the Maxxis IT up front and like it. It's the first time I am using this tire so I can't comment on the wear yet. I can tell you that w/ this tire I can easily take an inside line that takes effort on my YZ250 w/ a differant front tire.

I run the IT on the rear and an ST on the front as others have said the IT tends to push a little too much. The IT holds up well but doesnt give as good of cornering on softer stuff. The ST to me holds up pretty well but grabs a lot better on the soft stuff.

I run the IT in the rear and the SI in front. I was given hte SI by a local racer. I mostly ride hard pack stuff and the SI worked very well on wear and grip very well. I'm hooked on that combo!!!!!

I run 13PSI rear on a 19 and 12PSI on a 18.

I have tried them twice and hated them both times, off road and MX. Sure they last forever but that makes me hate them more because I want to change it once it's on the bike. They don't drive out of corners very well. They seem to slide more and spin up instead of driving than the Carlsbads and the new 952 Dunlops. I find these tires hook up much better than the Maxxis and last longer than the 756 or other Premium rubber. I go through a lot of tires usually changing a rear after 4-5 rides. I have run Dunlop, Bridgesone, Pirelli, Michelin and Kenda and I have not found a tire I like less than the IT. (ok, I exaggerate, the 739 is worse in soft conditions)

I have tried the IT's in all kinds of terrain from desert to mud and I don't understand why they get such good reviews.

I have been riding/racing for a long time since I was 5, I'm 34 now. Raced local Pro MX and A class offroad, though I mostly practice now since I get to ride more.

I don't mean to bash anyone's opinions, if the tire works for you great. I just keep hearing good reviews on them and it is completely opposite my experience with them and wonder why?

I tried to mount a 756 on a rim and broke the bead! I really do not understand why they are so tight. My local parts supplier claims that Dunlop makes them that way to avoid slippage for the pros. We common men just need to have a dealer mount them. It cost me two bucks for the mount and I am happy.

I still prefer the Michelin tires over all though. I ride woods in PA

There's your answer, you ride too fast!

Seriously, it does make a big difference. I gave the 739 my YZ came with to a guy I work with, he'll love it. I wouldn't dare ride with one, they suck. Big difference is he's slow and I'm fast. He'll never push a tire's abilities like someone that knows how to ride fast will. I've tried Maxis tires, I didn't like them. I couldn't trust that they'd hold when pushed hard, especially in off-camber fast turns. I actually didn't think they lasted that much longer anyway, and the price difference isn't that much. For me there's not much better than a pair of 756's. (I haven't tried the new Dunlop's yet, I have a couple 756's left to go.)

I believe any tire is going to act differently at 60mph than it is at 30. If a tire works good at 30 and not at 60, somebody that never goes that fast will think it's a great tire. I think the Dunlops work good at 30 AND 60. I know I'm oversimplifying here, but I think you get the idea. I don't necessarily mean exact speeds, I mean how hard a tire is pushed to it's limits.
