What would be a better bike for hillclimbing?

Recommended Posts

No offense but unless you have gotten better then in those videos I think your bike still has much more power that you arent using. It seems like you are cruizing up those hills in mid to 3/4 throttle. You need to be wfo banging the gears, I know the video is always deciving, but I can tell that that hill is pretty serious. You gotta use those jumps as a time to get your revs up and continue railing that hill. I wish I had those hills as they look like tons of fun.

Yeah, they are a ton of fun. Don't worry, no offence taken. I was just playing there on those hills, if I was racing I would be going faster yet. And if anyone has gotten the impression that I think I'm really good, it's not true. I can climb hills, but I'm no Dusty Beers. ?

A 500 in a smaller frame would be ideal. I saw one last year in a YZ frame. It was sweet! Too much money though.

I live in Lovell, Wyoming which is 5 miles south of Cowley. I love those hills.

Darksun27: You live in Kentucky. I live in Wyoming. You have trails, tracks, and lots of trees. I ride the desert (no trees) and climb hills that are taller than you state's average elevation. Big difference. The reason I say my brother's YZ 250 is faster is because I have rode it. It isn't faster on the harder ground, but on soft steep hills it really goes good.

YZLEE - You have obviously never rode or been to Kentucky. I have been to Wyoming several times and can appreciate the Big Hills you all have - However, there are places in Kentucky that have long steep rocky uphill sections with & without trees that you would dream about climbing on a 450/500 or whatever - muchless a 426. Good videos - Looks to me that you have plenty of throttle left if you want to use it. Your 426 should be fine....From my experience, hill climbing is mostly rider. I have seen guys on XR's climb things that looked impossible...

Hit in 4th and pin it if it starts to bog lean over the tank a bit and clutch it to get spinning. You do not need a 450. If you really want the power get an ice cube kit. I can't believe that you hillclimb with a 14/50. I run a 13/51 and wish I had gotten a 53 rear. I guess we do different types of hills. The climbs around here are about 400ft long and are super steep and technical with tree roots and bushes, turns, ruts sand, mud, monster whoops, rock jumps, stump jumps cut into the hills. If you want to ride your bike to its full potential(which almost no one here can, no offense) then dont spin it up so much, you need to stay in the power not above it.

On your 426 if your having that hard of a time climbing those hills I suggest a 12t front and a 53 t rear. I run the 53 in the back most everywhere and it does just fine on my 426. Like some of the other guys said try getting some more momentum built up and hit that bad boy in 3rd or 4th, and even try up shifting up hill. If you feel it start to bog down just rev it up and drop the clutch, you'll do fine on the 426 but hell if you just wanted to get a new ride, Go for it.

I haven't tried the 444 kit but I hear it is sweet power.

Those are some nasty lookin hills. There is a place I ride in the mountains with a hill like that, full of roots and loose rock, it took me a long time to conquer that nasty biatch.

Ok now, those look like some good hills. ? How is the traction though? It looks packed and hard with a little loose stuff on top and the tree roots are surely a challenge. That would make for a different sort of hill climb.

I went out again today and I think I'm going to gear down and try that. Like somebody said earlier, sprockets are cheap. Traction was a real issue for me today, as the dirt is so dry it's almost a powder. I took some more video and I'll post it up when I've edited it.
