Maxxis Desert IT upfront?

Recommended Posts

From reading a lot of posts, I believe that a Maxxis Desert IT is a good rear tire for the riding I do (Las Vegas desert, rocks, etc.).

BUt, what about upfront? Is the DEsert IT good for upfront or is the regular SI better?

Im trying the Desert IT in front for the 1st time, 180 miles on it of baja terrain and happy with the performance so far!!

I LOVE the IT for the rear but for the front I think it's marginal. Sure, wear it wears like iron just like the rear but it skates when pushed hard. My next tire up front will be the SI from what others here have said about it's performance.

I have to agree with vmaxcbr900wr426 its what your preference is. I like the Desert IT for the front but many do like the SI. Im sure its the differnce in terrain!!! Either way with one in the rear and either front, you've got the best combo out in my opinion, theres no need to ever switch in my mind.

Update from my previous post, after 100+ miles on the desert IT front, it tends to skate in sharp corners, not so thrilled about that ?

I just gotta chime in and say I really like my non-desert IT in the front out here in Colorado.

I don't disagree with what's been said about the Desert rears (which is what I've been running lately). The deserts in the rear seem to help a bit with wear. Although installation...whew...

I've also had the SI front, which wasn't bad either. I think that at least the IT tread pattern in the front offers nice, positive feedback, especially under braking. I just pulled a Dunlop 755 off the front (seemingly similar to the SI) of my new WR as it was just too skate-y and unpredictable.

Gotta love the rubber discussion ?

I'm having the Desert IT for the rear and regular IT up front installed tomorrow. I went with the IT up front over the Desert IT because of the comments about its sliding out and because it was about $15 cheaper at Rockymountain!

I've only had the stock tires on my WR, so I'll try to remember to post my thougts about the tires after the first ride next week!

Indy says it best, you might prefer the SI depending on the riding you do but remember its a "soft to intermediate" tire and its not going to last probley half the time the Desert IT will. Theres always a compromise. My Desert IT doesent wash on me unless in sand like any other dirt tire will. I learn to ride it and save the money on replacing them twice as much but.... As I always say, different strokes!!!!!!!!

Just finished 500 miles of desert riding last week with my first set of Desert IT's. Rear is OK, you learn to ride it, it has exceptional wear and hooks up good in the rocks.

The front.......... well, if I ran out of firewood I wouldn't hesitate for a second to throw it on the fire and burn it!

The only good thing I have to say about the Desert IT front is that I did not get any flats, (front or rear), and that was my goal however I don't know how many times that POS front tire almost cost me a radiator ?
