How much oil stays behind ?

Hi guys

Just put some fresh oil and filter into my Z. I always put 2 liters into the motor but every time I drain the old oil I end up with 1700ml. I pour the old oil into the oil bottle so it's pretty accurate. I can see no oil usage with my bike, no smoke runs great, good compression and the spark plug is never sooty and the oil always reads good on the dipstick. Do you think there is some oil staying behind or does the bike get rid of excess oil as the sticker on the frame says 1700ml ? I run about 1000 - 1500 miles between oil changes and also drain the oil filter housing as well as heat the motor up before draining the old oil.

Thanks

You may have just burned it up.

Not very much stays in the engine. I'd estimate 2 or 3 oz. in the oil galleries.

when you drain the oil what techniques are you using? For instance I always find that i can get more oil out by tipping the bike side to side. Usually get an extra 100ml or more

I left the both drain plugs out for about 10 minutes and wiggled the bike from side to side and only got 1700 ml, no oil leaks. Heck maybe I should just accept that it's using some oil, it's got 31 000km on the clock now :excuseme:

hmmm  If it doesn't burn up or anything, and leaves 300ml behind each oil change.
Then on your 3rd change you only need to add one liter! :p

Exactly, if you use the same technique every time, at some point you will always get the same amount out... assuming you are not leaking or burning oil.

If you have no ol leaks, you are burning it.
I put a full 2 litres in mine at every change, and 2000 miles later it will be about 1/2" inch from the full mark.
Unless I have done no high speed motorway work, in which case it will only be a 1/4" inch down.

piston rings always leave some oil behind, even in the best motors... using synthetic helps as it won't burn in combustion, thats also the reason (one of them) it stays honey colored longer

I've always heard the four strokes burp a little oil at constant high rpm running???? hence BD CRF auxiliary oil tank...

Got a link for that.
I have always felt that the DRZ does not hold enough oil.

The reason for the CRF tank is the incredibly low volume (650cc of oil) that it holds in the crankcase.

Try here Neil...

If the link doesn't work, just go to Bajadesigns.com motorcycle parts and the tank is listed.

Thanks, but at that price I think I will give it a miss.
I may think about making one in the future, as I'm just not used to engines that hold so little oil
another litre would do the job nicely.

Mine does the same usually somewhere in the middle to top part of the top mark. Guess it's not an issue then. Afterall the bike is listed at 1.7 litres. On another note is it ideal to always have the oil on the top mark ? That is why I always worry because I would start at the top mark and then freak out when it drops below it.

2 liters eh... i run an 04 Z and its calls for 1700ml without a filter change and 1800ml to fill with a filter change. I change my oil and filter every 1000Km's/600 miles....maybe a little excessive but can your oil ever be too clean? At oil change time i am still full on the dip stick... next time i will actually measure what i drain out.

My 04E calls for 1700ml oil only, 1800ml with filter change, 2 liters with full rebuild. Unless simple math has failed me, I guess it will hold about 200ml after drained.

In an ideal world yes, and I try to keep mine at the full level.
I would certainly not go on an extended ride (50 miles +) knowing it was a little low.
It's a bit like tyre pressures, I check them once a week, and will put a bit in even if only 1 or 2 PSI down.
