My only drawback with my DRZ is the lack of a 6th gear. Has anyone ever changed the tranny to a six-speed? Could it be economically feasible? I have 14/47 gearing- bottom end is perfect, top end too whiny on street.

Seems like a common complaint. Suzuki, are you listening????

They either need a sixth gear or the 5 sp should have a dual range. IMO the dual range would only add minimal weight and really extend the versatility of this bike.

I love riding mine on the street with stock gearing and I don't want to give that up for the necessary lower dirt gearing. A dual range tranny should eliminate that problem.

Yosh is outstanding! Call them and ask about the CDI for a DRZ. Ask what the timing advance is on the 11K race CDI they make for a DRZ400.

None of those guys can even come close to the unanimous personal service you get from Kibblewhite!

Be patient, me and a buddy who has made trans gears are seriously looking into the possibility of a overdriven 5th, well more overdrive than stock. If someone could let me borrow their cases and trans I could say for sure if this is possible. I just need a teeny tiny bit of room in the case to make the ratio more overdriven.

That sounds like a fair trade. The project will not be quick nor do I promise it actually coming to fruition however.

6th would be great, but it's not going to happen.

Ha, ha- very funny stuff (but don't give up your day job!).

The reason I asked is because I just bought a new Harley Heritage Softail Classic with a five speed trans and the manufacture's accessory catalog has a 6 speed trans kit for it.

But I think I found a solution:

TE 450: Competition Enduro

Specifications

Engine
449cc 4-Stroke 4 valve DOHC
Liquid Cooled Single
Bore x Stroke
97 x 60.76 mm

Clutch / Transmission
Wet / Multiplate / 6 spd

Carburetion
41mm Keihin FCR

Brakes - F/R
260mm / 240mm

Suspension - F/R
50mm Marzoochi / Sachs

Dry Weight
237.7 lbs.

However, I would never give up my DRZ. Got too attached while transforming it from meek performer to pretty awesome beast.

Kind of funny that there is a six speed transmission available for the DRZ-110 but not one available for the 400.

Actually a 6 speed isn't even needed, but a wide ratio 5 speed could do absolute wonders for this bike. pdawg :excuseme:

I had an '86 Yamaha XT350 with a 6speed tranny. There is no viable reason why Suzuki did not put a 6speed tranny in this bike. I am at a loss.
When I go riding, I need to ride about 1hr. north on the highway to get there (and 1hr. back. Duh.). Having the ability to cruise at 65-70 without the bike screaming to be shifted would be nice.
I sent in a Suzuki customer service survey when I got the bike and specified that I would like an RMZ450S with a 6speed tranny. Apparently they didn't value my opinion!!!

There are 3 bikes in my garage. KLX400, DR350 and KLX300. 2 out of 3 have 6 gears. Just not the one that really needs it. :excuseme:

I guess when Suzuki went from the DR to the DRZ they had to cut costs. :bonk:

It's probably because the motor started-out in a quad, just like the magnesium engine cases which are protected in the quad but are open to damage on the bike.
A 6 speed would be ideal, or a dual range transmission but really all the bike needs is a lower first and taller 5th or just one of them.
If the taller 5th idea won't work due to the cases then I wonder if 1st could be shortened? All I really want is the same first you get with 14/47 and the 5th with 15/41. Not a huge change but it would be nice.

Because 6 gears makes all the gears thinner. Thats why the RMZ has four. I have replaced more than a few 2nd gear sets in 6spds. I never heard of anyone losing 2nd in a DRZ :excuseme:
