Basically it controls how fast the bars/steering can move side to side. First, they prevent fast movements that would yank the bars out of your hand. Kind of like hitting a root, burried rock, or clipping a tree. Second is they can be dialed up to slow down how fast you can move the bars for regular turning. So in sand, you set them harder to make it easier to turn. Plus they "filter" (dampen) out minor steering vibrations (like light head shake).

I have a bro-in-law that never uses one and he rides great. I have another that won't ride without. And another with one, but it came with the bike and he's not sure whether he needs it or not. All three are good riders with lots of experience.

See if you know someone with one that will let you try their bike out and see if you like it. It may not be worth the money to you. I am extremely happy with mine, specially for sand.

Hey, thanks for asking that question. I never knew what those things actually did. I could see how one could be really nice for sand. I can find myself flying pretty far in one or the other direction very easily until I get used to the sand again.

GPR 2.0 fan here. Put it on after 1500 miles and love it. The true definition of a dual sport is one that can do everything. The far end of the riding spectums (tight technical / deep sand / high-speed road / ice / rivers / jumping) demand better skills and with that comes more controlled riding. I feel that a having a second set of wheels (17/17 and 18/21 with own rotors/discs), a good damper, and a few front sprockets (13/14/15) and maybe a second chain, the DRZ can play on all sides. That said, the only thing you can do to significantly affect handling without tools and while you are riding is adjust the damper.
