EFI is coming!

Recommended Posts

You might not want to go back!!! You know you want to come over here! ?

my wife has been after me to go on a 2-3 wk trip down there, maybe if there were dirt bikes involved it'd sound alot more appealing. is there places to rent bikes? i imagine you wouldn't mind hooking a yank up with your secret riding spots ?

You guys crack me up on the EFI thing. You mean you want the extra weight and expense? We went through this on the FZ1 board a couple years ago-- all the hot shoes wanted EFI but it didn't change the bike as much as you'd think.

Instead of rejetting five times (or reading up on it and changing it once), you'll have to remap five times. On some pipes, you'll remap just to pass the sound inspection, then remap it again for the race.

Yamaha is way ahead of you pal. They are already working on a self tuning EFI controller that will work off a O2 sensor. EFI is so much more efficient it's only a matter of time before most bikes will have it. It's not all about performance either there is the enviroment to consider.

Hey Indy How much do you think the scan tool will cost? do you think Yamaha will make it avalible to the public right away? Will the chip be rewriteable or will they make us buy aftermarket boxes(vortex) Free mods will not be free any more. I am looking forward to EFI it will be great but it will not be cheap can you imagine a ride from 3000' asl to 12,000 in one day and having perfect jetting all day!

I think there will be a few aftermarket plug in EFI adjustors that will help us guys that put on FMF pipes and modify air boxes and they should go for $250. or so. Remember the stock EFI will be set to California super greenie standards and with a simple cut of a wire we should be able to get a clean running stock bike. ?

Next year the Fed and CA standards will be the same so we'll have to see about an "emissions wire". The new (federal) EPA mandate specifies more stringent "tamper-proofing" as well as reduced vapor emissions through the tank walls. Like anything someone will find a way around it.

Got to hand it to the EPA. If there something that is not already regulated, they will find a way to regulate it. ? Give me a break! You get more gas vapors put into the atmosphere from what evaporates while you are putting gas in your car at the pump! ?:bonk:

Tallboy-

Well, for one I'd rejet before I arrived if there was a major altitude change. : )

And while there are certainly high altitude riders- and FI would be cool for that-- how large is the market for guys that make that kind of elevation change? All but a relative few will take advantage of that feature.

I'm not saying it's bad or that it's not coming. I'm saying there are misconceptions about what it'll do.

And Simon Vic- the issue isn't reliability; I stated FI weighs more than a carb. If you don't have a charging system and a battery like my WR, the system will weigh significantly more.

Gents- don't get me wrong, in general it'll be a good thing. Auto adjusting FI which is what 99% of the folks need and would want.

Neil.

EFI, hydraulic clutch and a slipper clutch? Sounds like a gasgas....

http://www.gas-gas.net/products.php?line=FSE&model=450

I doubt any of them will be a closed loop system - no 02 sensor - but mass-air sensor for fuel-air compensation.

FWIW - the gasgas comes with a "race" setting and a "street" setting on the ECM - e.g. unplug a wire...

Yeah all kinds of positives but be careful what you wish for. I've had multiple carburated street bikes and a couple years ago bumped up to an EFI bike. The EFI works great but there is inherent abnormalities like multi-stage surging and burned out o2 sensors. I would consider letting a few model years roll out before jumping on that one.

Raptor 700's have been out for 6 months now with no EFI issues that I have dealt with personally. Yamaha has their stuff together with EFI. Raptor 700's are so dam easy to work on. Get bored, plug in the powercommader and screw with the mapping. Go ride it, screw with it some more......mess it up and set back to default map. My knuckles are still in one piece and my fingers are clean..........I might get carple tunnel working on EFI fuel systems...... ?

Yeah mate, there is a number of trail tours in Australia, as well as places to rent a bike. I could most likely hook you up with someones for free, just remember our rule down here, you break, you pay!

The riding is sensational, we are only limited to where we can go by fuel! As for riding spots, there is that many beaches, rivers, creeks, water holes, bays to go to out here, riding never ever gets boring. Lots of variation in terrain too, but we dont have any mountains up my way.

I will do you a deal. I want to go on a holiday over there maybe next year, so you could hook me up too!

i read something awhile back that the yz setup is using a capacitor instead of a battery,it takes a couple kicks to build the juice and then it has enough to fire off the pump. don't know for sure though ?

Well the montessa or what ever it is called honda trials bike doesn't have a battery!

That does sound like you guys can't win! I still can't understand why the big deal about bikes over there is??? They should be pushing public transport but that would cost them money!!!!
Like anything someone will find a way around it.

Most likely the manufacturers!!!!! I got a sheet off yamaha on what to do to put the bike back the way it was intended!

Arctic Cat snowmobiles have had battery-less EFI for about 8 years now. When cold, with the first pull of the starter rope, an efficient fuel pump pressurizes the fuel rail. On the second pull, the engine starts. They will typically start with one pull after having been run. These are 500 to 1000 cc two stroke twins with one injector per cylinder. I don't see much of a leap to pressurize a fuel rail for a single injector with the first kick, and then start on the second kick when cold. A restart after crashing/stalling should only take one kick. The future looks bright ?
