Sprocket question???

Im gearing up literally to go on the big dual sport Lake Hughs to jawbone trip in So Cal in two weeks (See places to ride- California for the post) and need to get some more top end. 99 WR400. I have the stock 14 tooth front sprocket on, stock rear and want to go a tooth down in the front for more top end and faster mph. My question is do I do down a tooth to 13 or up a tooth to 15 to get more MPH-top end. I know it sounds stupid and I think the answer is down a tooth to 13 but I just want to make sure. I know this isnt to best way to regear but Its just for this trip and dont want to swap the back or do a complete change so I was hoping to do just the front one tooth help???

Also does anyone run 13 in the front with the stock rear, whats the cruising speed in 5th it likes to run, Im looking for about 65mph or so and now with the 14 in the front it likes to do about 50 to 55 comfortably. If my calculations are wrong and someone thinks i should do something else to acheive 65 in 5th comfortably, please express your opinion thanks guys...

going up 1 tooth is equivalent to going down 3 tooth at the rear. for more top end speed u go up 1 tooth infront or a few at the rear. currently i'm using 15/45 for my supermotard n i love this combination. wat combination r u using?

Get a 15 for the front, that will give you more top speed, not much but you will notice it!!!

You gotta go up in the front or down in the back. Like it's already been said one tooth up is like taking 3 teeth off the rear.

I have a 46 rear that I use from time to time to increase top speed. It pretty high for tighter trail riding but the bike has enough torque to run on fire roads and quad trails.

Definately! I got 15/50 on my bike, it is a bit too wide, but only gives me 20 - 25 km/h faster than 14/50 gearing.

with 14/50 gearing, I would always got for that imaginary 6th gear, but I don't anymore with 15/50.

I would hate to see what 15/50 is like on a stock bike, my bike has the power to pull it and it is too wide for my liking.

The only time I would go wider on the gearing is if you have to do miles and miles of wide open throttle.

I know, I want to get a new chain soon and a black rear sprocket but dont want to break them in with the new front 15 cause I will almost always be running the 14 so in the future ill do it right and swap them all at the same time.

I will be going to 14/48 next. It is right in between the 14/50 and 15/50!
