setting sag on a 06

Recommended Posts

just got my 06 this past weekend, took it riding on sunday, man what an awesome bike. my question is what are you guys using to loosen the lock rings on the rear shock to adjust the sag. it's pretty tight in there, no where near as much room as my 04 250f. i was going to adjust it at the track but was having to much fun to spend the time to adjust it. thanks

You just need a hammer and screwdriver to loosen the lock nut. Then twist the spring and set nut by hand together in either direction until you get to where you need to be. Then tighten the lock nut with a screwdriver again. Go ride.

I just got my 05 YZF450 about a month ago..... when i went to adjust my race sag we used a screwdriver and hammer as well, But it warped the pre-load adjusters and bent them out of shape which ended up causing 4 of my threads to smash together. i had to take the entire shock off and take it to the local bike shop and they trimmed out those 4 messed up threads, Best tool to use on the rear shock is a spanner wrench, you can find them online for $12-$20, Also use some yamalube or any type of similar oil and rub it all over your rear shock before you adjust it, Doing that will actually enable you to move the spring instead of having to use any tools at all. ?

Edit: Also..... you'll have to take the entire rear off to get to your spring to be able to move it without any tools, which means unhooking your hairbox from the carb etc etc, This will only take 5minutes to undo everything so no biggie and it makes it so much easier

You should only need to use a hammer and screwdriver together to knock the locknut loose. Then you can just use the long screwdriver to turn the adjuster nut by using the frame as a fulcrum next to the shock reservoir.

Just twist the spring to adjust. Hammer and your best screwdriver are only needed for opening and locking the lock ring.
