Which Exhaust?? (already searched)

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone!

I'm looking to pipe my 05 WR450. I have about a $500 budget and want to get the most bang for my buck. I do mostly trail riding, so low end power is a good thing, but I also want more power in the whole range.

I have searched but haven't had much luck narrowing anything down.

Any suggestions would be VERY appreciated!

Thanks riders!

:bonk: You can already ride your bike to it's fullest potential, huh? Why not make it louder then ??:bonk:

Why spend the $500.

Is the PMB insert at $50 not good enough?

I would be interesting to know what the real difference would be.

I have the FMF Factory 4. Its loud and has plenty of power.

But, for chugging along the trails, which is what I like to do, I am not sure that I need such a high performance pipe.

Nice to have, very nice in fact, but I often wonder if I ever take full advantage of it.

In the newest " Dirtbike" magazine they show a dyno chart with the stock pipe, baffle removed. The fmf Q2, and a procircuit pipe. The Q2 was right around a 2 horsepower increase, and the PC pipe was like .4 hp more than that. Stock pipe baffle removed was putting out like 46.5 hp. I would go with the Q2. It looked like the gain in hp was right from idle all the way to redline.

I think you have made a mistake here. The pipe they tested was stock with the baffle IN. The difference in the magazine with the baffle in compared to the Q2 was 2 hp. If you look at the dyno posted on the FMF website comparing the Q to an insert (PMB?) it is almost identical. Click on the link comparing the Q on the 2003 WR450F to an insert. It looks too close to me to justify dropping the cash for the Q2. Do you think the Q2 is that much better than the Q to justify the cash over just using the PMB insert? Also, look at how the FMF site is in SAE horsepower and so is Dirt Bike mag, yet it registered less peak horsepower by a bunch (FMF site=41hp - DBmag = 48.8hp). Is this due to the new bikes having more power? http://www.fmfracing.com/dynoroom.asp#yam18

Dyno numbers on a dirt bike mean absolutely nothing, unless you're a manufacturer and your sales dept. is launching a new ad campaign. A dirt bike never maintains a constant RPM in real world conditions, unless your on a long open stretch, which is how often? A good mix of professional test-rider impressions are what tell you about a pipe's effect on the bike, and if it's the right one for you. If a pipe is said to wake up the low end and your riding environment and style would benefit from that, then get that pipe. Certainly, a pipe can't detract from stock performance, but how many instances do you know of where an aftermarket exhaust has done that? Dyno numbers, max. horsepower gains, etc. are important for street bikes and for people who ride dirt bikes and like to play "my ? is bigger than your ?." Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong...SC

I may be mistaken, I don't have the magazine in front of me to check. I thought they said it was with the baffle removed, I will look at it tonight.

I think a lot of exhaust selection is personal taste. I do mostly trail and mountain riding so I needed better low end but also wanted improvements throughout the power range. I also didn't want my bike to be too loud, but still have a nice aggressive sounding exhaust. For me the answer was the full Dr D system. Pulls strong throughout with very noticable improvements in low to mid range. The sound is deep but isn't too loud for my taste.

Wow, well thanks for the responses guys. Just for the record, I'm not looking for a "loud" pipe to show everyone how big my nuts are (as some think). I am looking for more performance out of my machine.

My buddy has a Leo Vince X3 on his 03 450 and that seemed to do the trick for him. I'm thinking about that, but would love a difffernt make/brand so we can trade for a bit if we wanted to. ?

So basically I need to just ask around more and see what works the best?

Clark I think you like to play that game.

When I was racing quads we really did go by dyno readings. We wanted to see where the power came on and dropped off and how long the power would hang on, ect.... I AM overridding mine and I have been looking at what dyno charts I can find about my bike and I haven't bought a pipe because I'm not seeing any good reason to. I took the tip out of mine and it had plenty more power. I think for trail ridding the PMB insert for $50 would be the best. Low end power is all back pressure. The stock muffler gives plenty and the PMB insert would just let more air out for top and mid range power. I can't see spending the money on a motocross pipe to ride in the woods. I can on a quad but not on a bike that is already fast. I'm just learing bikes but I DO know how motors work and the problem with the WR's power is not the pipe. Its the way the motor is set up.

WaGuy78 if I was wanting a new pipe, I'd spend the $50 on the PMB insert and if you are not satisfied I'LL buy the insert off of you and then get a pipe. The only thing you will really gane from a full exhaust is upper mid and top end. I've been debating over pipes for 6 months and still haven't bought one. I've also seen where a pipe that is wide open will hurt that bottom end pull from loss of pressure in the head..

Do you work for Dr D???

That's what they say, and there is better systems available...............

Oh yes it is the muffler! You are someone who cannot speak from experience, so, I would suggest you go out and buy a slip-on right away........ Then and only then, will you fully understand. The motor is set up fine, the only difference being a low to mid cam (YZ mid to top) and a heavy flywheel.

The only thing you will really gain from a full exhaust is upper mid and top end.
Sorry mate, you got it wrong. What you ment to say was with a MX version pipe, you will gain mid and top end. With a SX version pipe, you will gain low to mid.

The reality is that the stock muffler is soooooo crap, you will see gains everywhere. Big gains too.

I've also seen where a pipe that is wide open will hurt that bottom end pull from loss of pressure in the head..

You need to do your research a lot better mate.........

Its a lot of $$$ to gain a little extra power, the question to be asked is can you use that extra few HP, are you riding you machine to its maximum potential?

You don't have to use the bike to it's maximum potential to enjoy the benefits of more power. Why do people try and argue this point???

Since you are so intelegent, point me in the right direction so I can see what you are saying cause I'm NOT SEEING it. BY THE WAY, I know exactly what I have said. You are like Clark....get a life dude! The funny part is that you said that I am wrong and you have said the same thing I said. The fly wheel and cams are MOTOR SET UP!!!!!! And with the MX VERSION pipe, you said the SAME THING I SAID! If there is a SX VERSION pipe I'd like to see it. You can't stand the fact that I AM RIGHT! ALL you did was add a word that doesn't even matter and say I'm wrong. Anyone who had been around built engines and ACTUALLY raced one knows the basic set up for a good, strong motor. YOU DON'T

Do you think this is the first motor I have ever been around, mate? You remind me of the KIDS on 450R.org. You got a bike and you think you are an expert. ? My research was done under my ass on the bike PLUS what I've heard from the guys who build the atva pro engines. TC Racing's #1 saying is that head pressure builds horse power. More pressure more bottom end. He used to build 250X motors that would smoke the WR450. I think I'll listen to you though. You sound like you would know more.

I like the stock POS, I race Dez and it does just fine, but mine is looking ugly and spitting black crud. Anybody have a stock header and/or muffler they want to sell me?? PM me

I imagine one of these days I'll stop being so cheap I'll pay for an aftermarket.

I ride the Ti Powercore. I bought it because it was such a good price. 269.99 for the muffler and midpipe from rocky mountain. I highly recommend it, if you dont want to be loud, they have an insert coming out soon i believe. someone correct me if im wrong. But another suggestion would be the Yoshimura pro-comp i believe its called. my buddy rides one on his CR 450 and loves it because it gave him better power increases everywhere and its relatively quiet. thats my .02
