There is a website somewhere that lists Suzuki part numbers and diagrams. Might take a bit of searching but you can find it...

If there is a piece that looks like it moves[rotates], about 3/8 diameter, out the right hand side very front of the rocker cover, it most likely is the manual decompression. Best bet if you are really concerned is to take off the rocker cover and see if that bit is connected to something that pushes down on the top of the valve, that's how it reduces the compression. However, if it is just a stem or broken piece of shaft, you might have to get to the gym and work that right calf muscle or spend more $$. I looked at a pic of the SP, seems similar to our Aussie version but the canister bit sounds a little like emissions control. We don't have that on our version so it might be better to "leave well enough alone' as they say.

Those machines are pretty rare, and can be hard to find parts for.  I have an 89 and i am looking for a repair manual. I have brake problems and think it's time to freshen up the engine. Before i open the engine up i would love to have the book.  These bikes are awsome for power...

I had a 1989 DR600R Djebel. I was the 5th owner, and apparantly the prior 4 owners shouldn't have been allowed to own tools! It was a nightmare, but still ran pretty well. I think Suzuki's original design and build of the bike must have been pretty good, cause this bike had been worked over by a bunch of idiots, but still got the job done.

I bought it in a rush when financial times weren't so good for me - just finished law school and had a non-moto friendly wife at the time. Both the bike, and wife are long gone!

Anyway.........buying parts for that beast was a headache. It was like the Suzuki dealer had never heard of it. They didn't have a parts fische for it or anything. I wish I could help more, but for some reason these are rare bikes in North America. Not sure why, but they seem to be like some grey market annomolly.

Good luck, cause it's not a bad bike if you can find replacement parts to make it work.

I've got a workshop manual for a 84>89 DR/SP 600's.
If you need any spec's I'm happy to help.

Here in Australia engine parts etc are no problem, but things like plastics are hard to find.

Andersons in the States has heaps of parts, however I've never dealt with them.

Try ebay Europe- there's plenty of parts around, you just have to know where to look.  Although it was never officially imported into UK, I've always been able to get bits for mine.

This is a good site and thread! I just bought an 85 SP 600 from my son-in-law. Anybody know if it can be lowered like the DR650? I don't have a book but it only needs to come down about two inches.

Paid the princely sum of $2100 for it.
Took it up to Cape York in July. Rode from Brisbane, didn't miss a beat!

Hello to everyone.  Yesterday I became a proud owner of a 1989 DR600 Dakar.  Not a great time to buy with winter sneaking up quickly....but I have a few things to do on the bike to get it ready for next spring.  Looking forward to chatting with you guys.

Hi all,
I've just bought a DR600 from a mate for £400. Going by the specs on CMSNL, I seem to have an early DR600 (SN41A) as it has the rear drum brake. It's registered as a 1987 though so will have to investigate this further.
   Jobs done so far-
New chain and sprockets(supplied with bike)
Oil change and filter
Valve clearances set
Aftermarket exhaust painted
Re-instated all the road lighting
Stripped the front end and replaced fork seals, fluid and dust seals

Jobs still to do-
Fit new front brake caliper piston and seals
Fit new ignition
Replace bulbs in instruments
Sort oil weep at front of cam cover

With the MOT test, spends should be £150. I'm planning on getting another front wheel and having it respoked with a 17" rim and another rear wheel so I can enjoy quick wheel changes in the summer and keep the knobblies for winter and off-road.

Cheers
Ian

HA!! Another Ian! Howdy!
I'm rollin an SP600 that is getting a set of 03YZ250f forks, a 98 DR650 swingarm, and a full makeover. My avtar is a pic of the bike when I got it for $500. Beat as he11, but drove and ran. It'll be coming back better than  new and about 250lbs when I'm done with it. Cheers.

Hi Ian,
I'd like to see your SP when it's done.
My DR passed the MOT with no advisories. I've ordered a Avon Distanzia AM44 (£62 delivered) for the rear as the knobbly is no good for summer on the road. All that's left to do now is sort the weeping cam cover. I'm assuming the decompressor shafts have to come out before I can remove the cover? I have the pair of seals ready as I might as well replace them while the cover is off. Any advice on the cover removal is welcome.

I've also just been into my local breaker and found a 1983 SP400. It's a good runner but needs the blistered paint on the tank and rear guard re-done. They're asking £699 with V5 document. Quite a rare bike round these parts. Having just sold my RGV250L, the cash is burning a hole in my pocket and am tempted to just buy it.
