I've owned an '02 CRF450F (fun as hell, and wore out way to quickly for me), A XR650R (fun as hell over 50 mph, and heavy as heck), and more recently, the '05 CRF450X (top heavy, poor turning, but very reliable and estart).
I want to put a California plate on the "X" and make it street legal, and have been thinking about getting the '06 YZ450 for pure dirt.

My question is this: is it as great, and light feeling as the mags say?
Is the 5 speed usable for tight trails and some wide open (the CRFR had a very tall first gear).
What is the "fun" factor?
I will ride primaraly high CA desert, and very tight single track.
I don't want a WR, or another CR.

What do you think?

I have the YZ450F and I am happy with it. I changed the chain and front tire but it is otherwise stock. It will do all the things you asked from the Honda. Today's bikes are all so good that I would make the price and dealer support sway me, nothing else.

Do a search on this forum about the 06. You will find more than enough to sway you to blue!

If you ever decided to race, and you were racing in my class, I would prefer you bought another brand. I like having an edge over the competition.
