Hi everyone, can somebody tell what comes for tools in the stock XR tool kit?
I am tryiing to make a tool kit for mine and it came with nothing but a spark plug socket.
What tool do I need for changing tubes on the trail....17mm for the front axle if I can remember and 10mm for the little nuts. I can't remember the back what I need to take the tire off? Bike is in burried behind a pile of junk right now  winter is too long!

There are only a couple of cheap tools in the kit. The only one worth anything is the plug wrench because it is just about the only thing that can access the plug easily.

Run out and buy a Fredette wrench for the XR. It will have both the front and rear axle nuts sized on it.

Beside the necessary spark plug wrench is a spanner type wrench to adjust the shock preload. To use it requires removing the rear sub-frame and most people use a hammer and drift to turn the shock nut. The plug wrench is a must. The plug is so buried that I usually take the tank off when putting in a fresh plug.

Are your sure about the shock preload spanner? I have bought 5 new XR400s (1996, 1998, 2002 and two 2004s) and none of them have had a shock spanner in it.

You may be right on the spanner. I bought my 400 second hand and the guy had a Moose toolbag on it with the above mentioned tools plus spare levers, etc. It may have been something he bought.

Does anyone have pics of the "super special" and unique spark plug wrench required for the XR250? I did not get a tool kit and want to get this wrench. I see many tool kits on eBay for Honda bikes, and most have a long tubular plug wrench, but I am not sure if this will work on the XR250's.

Here is an example of a kit I thought may work:

I went down to my Honda dealer and bought a XR 650L tool kit. [I]t was 30 bucks or so but you can do everything you need to with this kit. It [h/as Ithe axle wre]nch, the front axle wrench and the plug wrench. It also has a set of basic pliers. I carried this kit for years on my XR 400. You'll need to buy 2 tire spoons for flat repairs. Keep the spoons and tube in the front fender pack, the tool kit in the rear fender pack.

The XR400R tool kit came with two items, a plug wrench and a multi-wrench.

That "looks" like the ones I've had, but they were all a dull, cheap, unpolished metal. And very thin (the important part). So I can't tell.........

18mm deep dish socket with a universal joint makes a way better spark plug wrench than the stock one. If I was making a kick I would throw in a 3/8" ratchet, with a 3" extension, the universal, 18mm deep dish, 12mm, 10mm, 8mm, and the same in box ends. I would also have a spare inner tube at least a front. U can always put a front in the back to get u home. tire irons and / or spoons. I would also carry a middle size crescent wrench for the axle nuts. I usually throw all this in a backpack or I just take a full tool kit with me in my truck to my riding area.

Where do you find a spark plug socket that will actually fit in the hole to access the plug? I've been looking for one forever. I even bought one from my local dealer that was supposedly designed for XR400s and it didn't fit.
