Couple of questions from a YZ guy

Recommended Posts

Please... don't shoot! ? I'm looking for advice for a few things on my soon to be acquired 06 YZ 450F, and I thought I'd ask in this forum since more of you are likely to ride trails than the guys in the YZ forum.

Handguards- what do you like? I had Rally Pros with GYT-R triple clamp mounts on my old 426 and really liked them. On the other hand, I've heard a lot of good about the Cycra handguards. Who likes what? These are the main two I'm considering, but if there is something else you like feel free to chime in.

Hourmeter- should I go with a simple meter like the one Yamaha offers, or drop a few extra bills for the TrailTech computer? I don't race, so will the TrailTech be overkill?

Let me know what you think ?

I have Cycras with the triple clamp mounts and they are bulletproof. I've heard good things about the Acerbis Multiplo as well.

I thought about getting a computer as well, but what I really wanted was a tach. I went with the Sendec Hour/Tachometer for $35 off of eBay. It works great and since I don't need when I ride, I have it tucked out of the way with 3M double-sided tape on my head tube. Trailtech is supposed to me releasing the Vapor that combines the functions of the Endurance with a Tach and optional engine temp sensor...SC

cowboy,

I got an odo/speedo on mybike. It is a cateye 8 mountain bike computer, and with a few sodering points and a foot of wire, it turned out to be great. I reccommend this as its cheap and easy to fix. It can record total riding time, odo, trip A/B, max speed, avg speed, current speed. Paradise Mtn bikes downtown moscow sells em for like 20-30 bucks.

kbryant- thanks for the tip, but I'm mostly interested in something that will keep track of time on the motor, I'm not sure if the Trail Tech does this or not but that's what I'm mainly after. We need to find somewhere to go ride so I can break the bike in once I get it! ?

The TrailTech does keep track of accumulated miles... but not hours on the motor (unless that is one of the 2 zillion settings/features I haven't yet discovered or don't use).

I put both on my bike. I use the TrailTech for MPH, trip odometer, average speed and top speed (oh yeah... and clock). I use the hour/tach for engine hours/maintenance and tach (although mine is also out of site while riding -- mounted on the frame).

Hes only 26 years old ?

Wrong... I'm 23 ?

Why buy a YZ to trail ride? Why not! I have never been in a situation where a WR would do anything my YZ won't. I have never been in a situation where I needed a headlight, plus I have versatility if I want to go to the track. I really don't see the need for electric start. With a YZ I don't have to open anything up to make the bike run like it should, plus with the 06 model you get the aluminum frame. I rode my YZ 426 on trails for 6 years with never a complaint, so why not get another one?

You forgot the most important one: you save about 30 lbs with the YZ! ?

Geez, is it that hard to comprehend? ?

Wrong... I'm 23 :bonk:

Lowedog- where in WA are you from? I spend my summers in Winthrop working for the USFS and most of the winter snowmobiling there.

Cashmere. Just about an hour and a half south of Winthrop. I've been wantiing to ride up north there and do some exploring. Maybe this year. We have so much good riding right from my driveway I hardly travel far to ride. What kind of sled do you ride? I used to snowmobile a lot but haven't much the last few years. This year is the best snow we have had in a long time though. I need to get out.

Yup.... top center, RT is current run time.

Primary display, left is distance, top center is run time, right is current speed.

An up or down arrow in the right window indicates if you are above or below your average speed.

Press Mode and it displays the same DST as the first screen, but top center becomes Trip Time (stopwatch mode, start/stop by pressing the left button) and right is average speed.

Press mode a second time and it displays the total odo, and top center accumulated run time (plus max speed on the right).

When done for the day, in the main screen, press and hold the left button and mode for 3 seconds and it resets the current ride/trip information back to zero, but ODO and ART are not reset unless you clear ALL data or change the battery.

I've got 27 hours, 39 minutes and 833 miles on my '05 WR250F.

While the unit powers itself down after 20 minutes, it appears that the RT/ART only accumulate time while the tire is actually moving, or perhaps for a very short period after it stops, so if you simply start the bike and let it idle, then that time is not added to the ART.

We'll have to get together for some riding this summer if I end up there again, I really want to explore the trails down around Wenatchee more. I ride an 01 RMK 700 and love it, it's a great sled (except for when trees jump out in front of it!)
