So, here's the dilemma - if I can pick up a nice '05 YZ 450 with really low hours on if for 2K+ less then buying a new one, do I go for it?

I know there has been a ton of improvements to the '06s, but am I really going to notice being a 25+ novice-amatuer? I plan to get the suspension setup for my weight and ability as soon as I get it a new bike....

so.....is it worth the extra dough or will I be fine with the '05 ?

Do you need the 06.......nah BUT it is by far the best yamaha yet!The 05 while is a great bike it feels like a cow next to the 06!It looks to me that the resale on the 05's and older has dropped to a all time low!!You have to think what will the 05 be worth when it's time to sell!

Spend a few extra $$. You deserve it. I dont know you from a hole in the wall but what the hell. Just think you can keep the new one longer, 1 year at least.

There is a chance that 07 may have fuel injection, which if done correctly, could alter the resale on the 06 by more than usual.

If I was in California, given the red/green sticker limitations we have, I would strongly consider getting the 05, (at the great price) then wait a year and get the 07.

Then again, it depends on what you're upgrading from, and how much use you're getting from it.

Additionally, you're only going be to able to ride for so many years in your life so why waste precious time on second rate stuff?

Was a big help or what??!!

IMO, spend the extra $$$ and get the 06, it has the new aluminum frame and the new SSS forks. Food for thought the 06 will have better resale value than the 05 because of all the upgrades from the 05.

, but am I really going to notice being a 25+ novice-amatuer?

I'm a 35yo slow-just ride for fun-beginner/novice-weekend warrior and the answer is
YES . The '06 is that much better than the '05, which I also owned. If you can afford it go with the '06.

alright....you guys really got me second guessing the thought of the 05!

I dunno....saving $2500 or so is nice....but the 06 will hold it's value a lot better and will probably be a lot nicer to ride....

Right now I'm riding a 99 YZ 400, which has got plenty of power overall, although the bike feels sluggish and heavy at times...I was thinking about a YZ 250F, but after riding my buddies '06 YZ250F a few weeks ago, I'm convinced the 450 is the way to go....

I'm pretty much riding every weekend once it warms up (usually only 1 day) and probably going to enter a 25+ Amatuer race or two next year - I raced 125 C & B class for a few years back when I was like 15....

I'm sure any 450 will be a HUGE improvement over what I'm riding now....

thanks for all the help. I'll let you know how I make out.

Your actual use determines your real needs. If your a casual trail play rider, then the 05 with a 2K+ savings is probablya smart way to go. But if your going to race or area serious racer, then the 06 is a much better bike for those purposes. Also, how long will you do this? I've found that great equipment never hurts in any sport and usually is essential to top performance or improvements in that sport. If you're a good skier, then get good ski equipment. Same goes for motorcycles. My 2 cents.

An 05' for $4000 is a great price! BUTTTTTTT I would pay the xtra dough for the aluminum frame and the lightest feeling 450 on the market! :bonk: Great bike if it's in your budget. And you can brag about it at the track when everyone wants to look at it! :bonk:  And tell them hell no when they want to ride it

If you can buy a brand new 05 YZ450F for $4000.............then buy it, but I don't think you can get on for even $5000!

Ok, so people state that the '06 will hold it's value better.....hmm, two years down the road you will be able to pick up an '06 for 3500-4300, used. You spend 6500 for one right now (at a really good deal, by the way) and now you are out 2200-3000 for two years' worth of riding....

OR.....you buy the '05 for 4000 (great deal!!) ride it for two years and sell it for 2500....you're out 1500 for two years' riding.

I went from a '98 400 to my '05. Believe me, this is the best bike I've ever owned, and I have enjoyed owning it every minute. Would I upgrade to an '06? Yeah, if the price were right, but I can't see paying 3000 more for the 06 over my 05. It's a great bike!!

Keep in mind, I have three daughters and so I am broke and living on beanie weenies......

If you buy the '05 right you won't eat shit on depreciation of a new bike...any new bike. Is the $2,500 the OTD difference? On the other hand, if you will always wonder about the '06 then you might as well cough up the dough and be happy. If it were me, I'd go for the '06 but I'm not exactly right in the head...ya know? Either way, you're gonna have a BLAST!!!!

Kinda along the same lines... I've got an '03 and I'm pretty much a beginner I guess. I can jump some small tables, but that's about it. Will i notice anything with the '06? (sorry to threadjack...)
