06' starting woes!!

Recommended Posts

OK, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna get bashed to no end on this one, but &%$#@!!!

Brand new bike and the damn thing only ran for a grand total of about 15 minutes in the 10 days Ive had it. I noticed it likes to start every other day. It makes me feel like a d*** when my friends want to here it run and it doesn't.

Here are the steps I take:

1. check the weather, barometer, call the weather man, check the owners manual for which starting procedure applies.

2. below 41 degrees, turn on gas, pull choke, 2 small twists, PRAY,feel for TDC, kick.

3. blub blub blub stall, (no throttle given at all)

4. no throttle, choke still open,TDC, kick,TDC, kick,TDC, kick,TDC, kick,TDC, kick,TDC, kick...............

5. check pulse, take a glycerin pill to prevent heart attack.

6. shut off gas, push choke in, put back on stand, walk away.

7. shut off garage lights a curse all the way to my laptop to bitch about it to you guys.?

8. ice down foot and peel away dead skin.

So now I ask of you again. &%$#@!, I am really tempted to return this. Now I haven't jetted the thing, farted with the fuel mixture or anything else. I know it has the ability to run, it did at the dealer and also at my house a few times. But neither was consistent, even the dealer who owns a few had a hard time.

Anything would be helpful here.. Thanks.

Jet the bike, mine is the same way, but I have the jets to do it, just need to brave the cold and do it.

I am sure once the pilot is bumped up, it will start much easier. At least I am hoping. Same boat as you, but I think the solution is to get it jetted.

Anyway, hope you get it worked out.

Relax. I had the same problem with my 06 250f. It was at my friends house and I kicked it forever probally about 100 kicks. It kept on backfireing and I was running out of strength. I felt like I was in a desert. I was kicking it so hard and I got so thirsty I almost threw up, no joke.

Something's wrong with it. Probably the fuel screw. I seriously had the SAME exact problem as you. The bike just started whenever it wanted to. Before we go to the fuel screw..

Pull out you're plug. Put in a new one and make sure it's tight. Not too tight but nice and snug in there. Put the cap back on, push down on it. Get on the bike. Check for gas & choke. Make sure their on. Give the throttle three wicks. Then kick away.

If it starts RIDE IT. You better put youre helmet and all on before you go to start it. Warm it up until the radiators are warm to touch, then HAUL ASS. Go wide open get that plug burning. I'm sure you know, you can't put around on 250f/450f's. If you do you will carbon foul the plug.

My bike did the same thing as youres. EXACTLY the same thing. Now it starts first kick usually. So don't worry about it, you'll get it kicked over again.

Let me know how it goes.

Let me get this straight, new plug on a new bike, jet the new bike, fart with mixtures. Oh yeah, pray. I'll give it a shot. My foot still hurts, so I think I'll have a beer watch the races on channel 2, then go futz around. Good thing I got the propane takns filled for the heaters. really cold here. But the snow is just about gone after giving us 2 ft a week ago. thanks guys, I'll keep you posted as I slowly decline into a full blown thumper mental breakdown. ?

It's all about not getting enough fuel. Open the petcock, tip the bike till you see gas coming out from the float bowl vent hose. Now twist the throttle 4 times instead of 2. Raise the idle half a turn (clockwise), choke on and I'll send you money if it won't start.

Now why don't you break in the bike properly? Starting it up and showing your friends is dumb. Break it in first, you should not even start it until you are ready to warm it up for the break-in sessions.

Rejet it first, it's too lean from factory.

Why does the factory send the bikes lean?? Doesn't make any sense to me, mistake maby?

Hey sureblue, you are dead on with I should break it in first. But two reasons.

1. this is the first 4 stroke in my group of riding buddies, so we kind of turn into kids at Christmas.

2. I want to make sure I can get it to start and properly warm up before I drive almost 2hrs to the track just to end up loading it back up for a long miserable drive home.

I just finished watching the races and I will now go to the garage and try your method. How much money we talking here?? Forget the cash, you could throw me an "I told you so". Keep you updated. oh yeah, after I twist 4 times, that's it. No more gas at all, given that it doesn't fire up. Trial and error time.

I think alpinestars should develop a boot with thicker inseams, my foot is killing me.

Wish me luck.

Wicked, I assume you still have the stock jetting?

When I brought my '06 home it was a PITA to start and I have owned YZF's since '99 so I know the starting drill. Believe it or not I opened up the throttle a bit when I was trying to start it and it fired right up.

I think the idle is a bit low stock and the stock jetting is too lean, 48 pilot and 170 main is a good starting point. Once I rejetted the bike it started a lot easier.

That is what I experienced...may or may not help.

Did you try the plug yet? Leaning you're bike over will flood it, and then lead to carbon fouling.. Since you explained basically exactly what happened to me it's probally the same problem as I had.

Swap you're plug.

It'll probably start.

If it fould again, it's the fuel screw/jetting.

If it doesn't foul again youre good to go.

Keep notice of when you kick it. Is gas coming out of the overflow tube? That's a symptom of the fuel screw not being set right.

Had a heck of a time starting mine also. I had already went to a 48 pilot and 170 main before even trying to start it the first time. Kicked and kicked, choke on and off, even tried using the hot start because I figured it was flooded. Wore myself out, went inside long enough to get my heart rate back down and let my leg rest. Came back out and more of the same. Finally cracked the throttle about a 1/4 inch, started right up! I think they have the idle speed set too low. Whenever it warms up, I am going to start it again and adjust the idle higher.

Here is the update. I didn't have another plug handy so I had to use sureblue's method. And sure as death and taxes, it fired on the third kick.WOO HOOO!!!!!!!

Now if I can get it to idle with the choke off, I'll be golden. And the temp in my garage is about 40 degrees, until I turn on the heaters, then I can bring the temp up to whatever I want. I don't let them run all the time. Detached 40'x40', can get pretty expensive to heat all the time. About this whole jetting thing, I spoke to my dealer, not just any ordinary dealer, the guy who prepped my bike is a 4 time district expert champ. he said leave it be until I ride it. I tried to ride it today, but when I let it warm up with the choke on,( revs increased) felt the rads, they were warm, shut choke off, the damn thing went rough idle to a stall. had to choke it to get it running again, but only 1 or 2 kicks. When I put it in gear ant let the clutch out it stalled. Maybe it wasn't warm enough. I think I might jet it anyway, gonna have to eventually. Thanks for all the help. I'm trying to get ready for the first race (3/19/06), hopefully this thing is just a mere oversight. Thanks again, and if your wondering, I've been riding for 24yrs, but only 2 strokes, well, 4 stroke street bikes. Enough blabbn' thanks.

Get the bike jetted properly, fuel screw either richer or leaner depending on weather and shred to your content. Just started my 06 450, been -13f yesterday and high today was 25f and two weeks since I went to the track. Started after 4 kicks and then proceeded to p%#@s off the neighbors by flyin up and down the street.
