New guy here.....great forums by the way.

I have a "VINTAGE" 1989 XR600r that I try to keep cherry. My question is that due to the lack of decent aftermarket cans available for the dual headpipe has anyone put a pre-89' or 91' or later headpipe on their bike with sucsess ??

I searched the forum but came up blank.

I know the Honda part #'s are differen but that really doesnt mean much to me...the pipes are identical except for the lack of 1 pipe !! Honda says the heads are different but everything internally is the same.....they change part #'s from year to year if the color changes or a different washer is used !!

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Bob

I've got an 89 also and have wondered the same exact thing! I'm interested to see what the answer is. The other question that I have is... Can I use a rear shock from a newer XR600R on my 89 or are they different?

Thanks,
Ed

As far as the book says the newer shock will fit....Why use a newer shock?? I had mine done at Pro-action.com....these guys rock, some of the best and the price was right.
I ordered the pipe fromTucker Rocky so I'll let you know if it fits.

Yeah, let us know if it fits. I'm betting it does because 86-87 mufflers generally fit on 90-2000 bikes.

I had my shock done by Baja Designs and I just could never get used to it. I actually sent it back to them and had the valving set back to stock. Now it seems like the shock is too springy. Sometimes I see aftermarket shocks on Ebay but they are usually for newer XR600s, thats why I was wondering if a newer shock would work ok on an 89. But if you had good luck with Pro-Action maybe I'll give them a try. How much did they charge and what did they do to the shock?

They set it up according to my height, weight and riding style..........the did a rebuild, revalve and a new spring. Off the top of my head the re-valve was $225 which included the re-build and the spring was $100. Prices are on their site www.pro-action.com
Give them a call, they know their shit and will tell you what you need.
