Another Successful CA. plated WR426!

Recommended Posts

Well with all the problems/rumors Ive heard about trying to plate an 02' WR426 thats never been plated I figure Id give it a run anyway.

Im happy to report I was able to successfully dual register my bike (which has only had offroad reg. 'til now) without a single bit of resistance. ?

Now Im off to grab some 17's and supermoto on down the road. ?

The biggest issue i had was with taking the bike to just a local automobile place. So after a few failed attempts i just took it into the dealership and they did it there. the problem, is that nobody knows the rules of making an offroad street legal. for example, you dont need a high/low beam, you dont need your brake light wired to the front brake, you do not need blinkers IF it doesnt come off the showroom floor with them, and you only need a mirror on the left side. It was very frustrating trying to explain this to certain people.

According to the CHP document #888 (obtained from DMV) it is required (in CA.) to have hi/lo headlight with beam indicator, blinkers, horn, brake/tail light (wired to rear only), plate light, dot tires, mirror, reflector, plus other obvious basics.

Basically I just showed up to DMV to register the bike for the first time (since purchasing in Dec.) with title in hand. I asked for dual reg. and was asked to fill out a statement of facts stating my request. The DMV pulled the bike records which showed it had never been registered for highway use (offroad only). At this point I puckered up and closed my eyes to wait for the bad news. It never came.

I paid my two reg. fees and was asked to go get a light inspection certificate.

Now, I was reading the DMV website which stated that if you couldnt find an authorized place within a reasonable distance to get the inspection done that they would take a statement of facts signed by a motorcycle repair shop stating that they did the inspection. So, I took it down to my buddy's shop.........and as they say "The rest is history!" ?

That sucks, I feel bad for you Californians. All I had to do was get the liscense plate, one mirror, wire brake light to the rear, horn, and DOT tires and I was good to go.

Good job! I always thought the VIN having a 3 or a C in the eighth position would put a flag up in DMV computer but I guess not. Think if I sent you my paperwork your buddys shop would sign in off for me?? ?

Wow, I feel bad for you Utahan's ? I just went in, got my plate. Had no mirros, no stop lamp, no high beam, knobbies etc (didnt do anything) but since then, I have wired in a stop lamp, high/low beam and added 2 mirrors. My state requires both mirrors, but not DOT tires or blinkers. We dont even do inspections on bikes anymore. Either its impossible to plate or super easy. ?

Did the DMV see the bike at all, or just rely on the cert from the shop?

I'm hesitant to buy a bike without knowing for a fact that it'll go streetlegal without doing a special construct (don't think my parent's insurance would cover it with a non-factory title).

I'll probably have 1500 bucks to spend on the conversion, and I can take the time to have my stock hubs relaced on 17s, since I've got my current bike that isn't going anywhere.

Do-able?

Where in CA are you?

When I got my 01 WR 426 plated it didn't even have a dual sport kit on it. I just had the signed off paperwork from a great shop. I had to sign off on it as well taking all the responsibility that the bike was good to go.

The shop didn't want me to spend my money on a dual sport kit if the bike couldn't get a plate. The Ventura DMV never even looked at my bike. Didn't even ask about insurance. I dual registered it got a D/S kit and insurance and the bike is good to go.

And you haven't had any problems with them rescinding your plate or calls at 2 AM or anything similar?

I dearly want a DS 426F, and my parents live in Bev. Hills, so I could probably use the DMV up there since the one here in San Diego is outrageously strict on this apparently.

Trouble is, I need to buy a bike first, and then buy all the parts, so I need to make sure I can get this done before dumping the money into the project.

? OK I know its a dead horse but can anyone in CA give up exactly what they did or where these ''great shops'' are. Yeah, I'm a noob to this but I definately would be appreciative of the information. Those of you that have done it in CA would be FN heroes on this site if you hooked us up on this. Obviously I want info for Southern CA but anywhere in the state would be cool. ?

Riverside DMV, on Brockton street, plated a off-highway bike last week. Proper dual sport kit installed, of course.

here in NV my (soo to be) bike is street legal, it has no hi beam, brake light only on rear brake and blinkers light up but don't, blink (you need to manually blink them hehe)

now as long as I can get a plate if I move to Cali, for that we'll see :S.. it's a red sticker bike with the 3 or C in the VIN I think.

Cool. I never even dreamed of having my YZ plated when I was living in So Cal. When I registered my bike here in OR the lady at the DMV didn't even blink when I asked for plate for it. All she asked was "Did you bring your checkbook?"

No lights, no mirrors, no DOT tires, etc..... doesn't matter as long as the check cashes and you know your responsibilty involved with making the bike street legal. A state that lets you govern your own actions. Unheard of........

Hey toyota mdt tech, my 04 wr450 is plated in WA also but I had to buy it in OR to get the plate. All I have is 1 mirror and a brake light switch but I thought to be totally legal I needed DOT tires and a horn. Question, how did you wire the headlight up for a high beam?
